Xi is one of the four ancient capitals in China. It was designated as a "World Historic City" by UNESCO in 1981 and one of the top ten ancient capitals in the world selected by the American media.

These four gates are also the original gates of the ancient city wall. Since the Republic of China, many new city gates have been built to facilitate access to the ancient city. So far, Xi'an City Wall has 18 gates.
