Zizhong is located in the middle of Sichuan Basin, bordering Dongxing District and Anyue County in the east, Weiyuan County in the south, Renshou County in the west and Ziyang in the north.

Zizhong County is a timber-producing county in the key forest areas in central Sichuan, with a forest area of 620,000 mu, including 345,000 mu of shelterbelts and timber forests dominated by Pinus massoniana, Pinus elliottii, Cupressus mexicana and Platycladus orientalis, and 0/0.5 million mu of bamboo forest/kloc. The main economies are Tarot orange, navel orange, ponkan, loquat, chestnut, pomelo peach and Huang Huali. The county's forest coverage rate is 25.8%. The county-owned forest farm, which is 0/5km away from the county seat/kloc-,has two scenic spots, Baiyun Mountain and White Cloud Gorges, including 65,438 main peaks and more than 50 scenic spots. The main cultural landscapes in Zizhong County are: the spring rhyme of the cliff at Chonglongshan and the cliff statues at Beiyan, the Confucian Temple, the Wumiao Temple, the Dongyue Temple, the Yongqing Temple, a street in the Qing Dynasty, the Dadongmen Tower in the Southern Song Dynasty, the Kanluoji in the Tang Dynasty (famous for its murals), the Twin Towers in the Tang Dynasty and the ancient town of Luoquan (now a provincial historical and cultural town). The main natural landscapes in the territory are White Cloud Gorges Scenic Area (listed as Baiyun Scenic Area, the 13th largest forest scenic area in Sichuan Province), luoquan Karst Cave Group and Qingmeishan Karst Cave with peculiar landscapes, Jiulong Gorge and Longjiang Lake Scenic Area. At present, Zizhong is the county with the richest tourism resources in Neijiang City.

Zizhong county has developed transportation. Chengdu-chongqing railway, Wei Zi Highway, 32 1 National Highway and Chengdu-Chongqing-expressway run through the whole territory.
