The Historical Evolution of Duandao

1890, Mitsubishi bought the island and developed coal resources on the seabed here. This has attracted people's attention. The glory of Duandao also kicked off. For nearly a century, it was one of the main coal producing areas in Japan.

Duandao was owned by Mitsubishi Materials and returned to Nagasaki Prefecture Government unconditionally in 2002. In August 2006, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry indicated that Duandao would be registered as a World Heritage Site for support.

On April 22, 2009, Duandao opened for tourism.
