Why do you still need to enter the bridal chamber after getting married?
The new house for marriage is usually called the "bridal chamber", no matter how luxurious or simple it is. "The wedding night with flowers and candles, and the time when the gold medal is named" are the two happiest things in the lives of ancient people. "Golden Ranking Title" talks about getting a Jinshi in the imperial examination. There is information available and it is easy to understand. Then why is the new house called the "bridal chamber" and also has "flowers and candles"? This is worth exploring.
Regarding the "bridal chamber", "Ciyuan" explains: the bridal chamber refers to "the deep inner chamber." "Chu Song" Song Yu's "Calling the Soul": "The beauty of the appearance is better than the bridal chamber." Note: "The cave," "Deep." Later, the newlyweds' new house was called the bridal chamber. "Ciyuan" also called "bridal chamber flowers and candles" as "lights in the deep room", which both interpreted "hole" as "deep", which should be good. But there is no explanation why it is called "the newlyweds' new house is the bridal chamber". Perhaps it is because the newlyweds choose a deep inner room as their new house. I think this is a superficial explanation that does not go deep into the cultural connotation. Later, while reading the newspaper, I accidentally discovered a special-page advertisement in Linfen City, Shanxi Province, promoting local tourism resources. It mentioned a legend that provided a historical explanation for the "bridal chamber". The advertisement said that there is Gushe Mountain to the west of Linfen. Gushe Mountain is recorded in the Dongshan Classic of Mountains and Seas and the Northern Classic of Mountains and Seas. It is said that there is a cave in the mountain where Tang Yao married the Deer Fairy. Later generations called it the "bridal chamber" because on the night of the wedding, the fire on the top of the cave shone brightly like flowers and candles, so there was a saying of "bridal chamber with flowers and candles". This is quite interesting, because Linfen, Shanxi, was called "Pingyang" in ancient times. It was the place where Yao established his capital in the Tang Dynasty and still retains the tall Yao Mausoleum and the magnificent Yao Temple. There is such a local saying, which should include a little historical information. It at least shows that the word "bridal chamber" does have connotations, and is not as superficial and simple as the "Etymology" explains.
The ancients, especially the people of primitive tribes, used "cave" as "house". As the "Peking Man" site shows. It must have been an unusual wedding held in the cave, gradually forming the word "bridal chamber". According to "Xinhuanet", there is another legend about the origin of the "bridal chamber", which is related to Emperor Xuanyuan. It is said that after Emperor Xuanyuan established a tribal alliance, he stopped group marriages and tried to implement monogamy because people lived in caves at that time. A man and a woman got married. The tribesmen came to congratulate and held a ceremony. They worshiped heaven and earth, worshiped their parents, and the couple worshiped each other. Then they were sent to a cave, leaving only a small door. They were not allowed to leave the cave, eat or drink. The family members of both parties will send them in, and after living there for more than a month and establishing a relationship, they will be officially married. This is "entering the bridal chamber". However, it is not easy to change a system. Many people are still not used to the life of monogamy. It is said that after a man and a woman got married, they did not want to be bound by this. They both ran away from the bridal chamber and wanted to find more sex. Friends, unexpectedly they got lost after escaping into the forest. They were hungry, thirsty, and afraid of encountering wild beasts. They didn't dare to break up, so they had to rest under a tree. Because they chased away the bees above them, they caused a swarm of bees to cause chaos. The two men struck stones to make fire, lit dry firewood, and burned the honeycomb. Honey flowed down, so they picked some mushrooms and dipped them in honey to satisfy their hunger. After a month in the forest, they were rescued. But this month of life allowed the two to truly establish a relationship and live a sweet life of monogamy. It is said that this is the so-called "honeymoon". I think these two legends reveal the essence of "bridal chamber" and show that the word "bridal chamber" is indeed related to the caves where ancestors lived.
