The largest inland sea in Japan is Seto Inland Sea.

Situated between Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku, Seto Inland Sea is 440 kilometers long from east to west and 5-55 kilometers wide from north to south, covering an area of about 9,500 square kilometers. It is formed by land subsidence and seawater intrusion, with an average water depth of about 37 meters. The coastline is tortuous, and large and small islands are dotted, which is called "multi-island sea".

Seto inland sea is easy to sail, and hundreds of islands are distributed in it, of which Awaji Island is the largest. Hou Feng Waterway and Jiyi Waterway connect the Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean, and the Guanmen Strait connects the East China Sea to the west. This area is the cultural exchange center on the transportation line between Kansai area of Japan and the Asian continent. Coastal areas used to be the main salt-producing areas, but now petrochemical industry is on the rise. This is a popular holiday resort and the whole area belongs to Seto Inland Sea National Park.
