Scenic spot-Longshan Grottoes

Longshan Grottoes, located at the top of Longshan Mountain, 26 kilometers southwest of Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, is a national key cultural relic protection unit and the largest existing pure Taoist grottoes in China.

Shanxi was one of the areas ruled by Mongolia earlier in the Southern Song Dynasty and the Jin and Yuan Dynasties, and it was also one of the areas where Quanzhen religion developed greatly in the early stage. The theme of the statues in Longshan Grottoes, except the Sanqing God, which is generally worshipped by a few Taoist priests, is mostly the statues revered by tribes as the founders of the mountains. Nowadays, Changchun Palace, Qiu Chuji Abbot (now the predecessor of Beijing Baiyun Temple) and other Yuan Dynasty statues have not existed for a long time, and Longshan Grottoes have preserved quite complete sculptures with the characteristics of Quanzhen Taoism, which is very precious.

According to textual research, the grottoes were dug in the Sui and Tang Dynasties, the Yuan Dynasty and the Ming Dynasty. ***9 caves, namely Virtual Emperor Cave, Sanqing Cave, Lieru Cave, Santian Exorcism Cave, Zhen Xuan Cave, Piyunzi Cave, Qizhen Cave, Huangsan Cave and Taoist Cave, 65 Taoist stone statues, embossed Yunlong, Shuangfeng algae wells, cranes and many other algae wells. The style of the statue is simple, concise and solemn, and the costumes are simple and the folds are clear, which is quite different from the Buddhist grottoes. Compared with the statues in Tang and Yuan Dynasties, there are great differences in theme style, grotto construction and carving techniques. The former has obvious traces of grottoes, while the grottoes in the Yuan Dynasty fully show the concreteness respected by Quanzhen religion. According to the contents of different themes, the planners of grottoes have made comprehensive consideration in layout, carving and knife work. According to the specific needs of the sculpture theme, they made many subtle changes in the use of straight board and generalized knife method. It should be said that they are not only the representatives of Taoist grottoes in this period, but also the representative works of carving art in northern China in the same period. Unfortunately, all the stone tablets, most headscarves, and the reliefs of the flying and protector in the grottoes were lost or stolen in the early years.

The discovery of Longshan Grottoes provides valuable information for studying the development of Taoism in China and the art of Taoist Grottoes in Yuan Dynasty.
