Tourism in Madeira Island

Madeira is a relatively advanced tourist destination in Europe. Because of tradition, many British people travel to Madeira, and they mainly gather in Funchal.

Madeira Island is especially a good place for hiking. There are roads along the waterways to repair and maintain them. Today, many tourists use these roads for hiking. But some places are quite dangerous, so travelers should not faint at heights.

There are almost no beaches for swimming and rest in Madeira Island, but there are nearly 9 kilometers of beaches in Santa Island.

Madeira's airport is also famous. It is built by the mountains and the sea. From 1984 to 1986, it was expanded, and reinforced concrete columns were extended to the sea almost twice. Previously, only small planes could land, and only very experienced pilots could land here.

Karl I, the last emperor of Austria-Hungary, came here to take refuge after abdication. He died on April 1922 and was buried near Funchal.

Princess Sissi, the queen of Austria, spent half a year here in the winter from 1860 to 186 1. She felt bored in Madeira and later moved to Lake Geneva.

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill spent many holidays in Madeira and painted here for leisure.
