Where is the ruins of the ancient city of Gaogoubao?
The ancient city of Gaogoubao is located in Great Wall Township, 25 kilometers east of the city, with Zhongshadun in the west, Moon City in the Great Wall in the east, Xinditan in the south and Dasha in the north. Surrounded by desert, the original appearance of this city is still there, and it is the only surviving site of the ancient city of Han Dynasty in Liangzhou. There is a folk proverb in Liangzhou: "Gaogoubao comes first, then Liangzhou City". This is the east gate of Liangzhou, and there is a natural spring, Heimulin Lake (commonly known as Longwangquan and Heimo Lake) in the territory, which is rich in water plants and can be cultivated and grazing. "Geography of Hanshu" said that "Liangzhou animal husbandry is the mercy of the world". In the Sui and Tang dynasties, the horse husbandry supervisor in Liangzhou was located here, so it still retains the names of Qianying Racecourse and Xihu Racecourse. Later, due to the decrease of water resources and the desertification of grassland, farmers were forced to abandon farming and grazing, so the ancient city was silent in the desert.
after more than two thousand years of wars, sandstorms and other disasters, the ancient city of Gaogoubao has been preserved to this day, basically intact. From the ruins, the ancient city is rectangular, with a length of 25 meters from east to west and a width of 135 meters from north to south. The cliffs on both sides of the southwest are well preserved. There are temple ruins left on a mound about 4 meters high in the middle of the west, and there are tombs of the Han Dynasty around the city. The temple site left on the stage was built in the 14th year of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty (1381). The original iron bell was cast with the head of the temple fair, the cost of silver and the scale of the building. It was destroyed in 1958. According to the inscription that Gaogoubao Temple was rebuilt in the forty-eighth year of Qing Emperor Kangxi (179), the temple was large in scale and full of incense. According to Wuwei County Records, there were 1 garrison, 45 infantry, 2 cavalry, 27 guns and 1 cannons. It shows that soldiers have been stationed in the city of Gaogoubao during the Qing Dynasty.
