Xinzhou City is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Shanxi Province of the People's Republic of China, located in the north-central part of Shanxi Province, on the east bank of the Yellow River. The city borders Shuozhou City, Datong City and Hohhot City of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the north, Shijiazhuang City and Baoding City of Hebei Province in the east, Lvliang City, Taiyuan City and Yangquan City in the south, and Ordos City of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Yulin City of Shaanxi Province in the west across the Yellow River.

It is located in the eastern part of the Loess Plateau, with Guancen Mountain and Luya Mountain in the western part of Luliang Mountain. The central part is Yunzhongshan and Xinding Basin; Mount Hengshan, Mount Wutai and Taihang Mountain are in the east. Hutuo River originates from Wutai Mountain and leaves the country in the southeast. Fenhe River flows through the central part of the city.
