Quzhou City is located in the west of Zhejiang, on the upper reaches of the Qiantang River. The geographical coordinates are 118°01′ to 119°20′ east longitude and 28°14′ to 29°30′ north latitude. It borders Fujian to the south, Jiangxi to the west, Anhui to the north, and is connected to the three cities of Hangzhou, Jinhua and Lishui within the province. Quzhou City is a transportation hub and political, economic and cultural center in western Zhejiang. It is known as the thoroughfare of four provinces and the head of five roads. It has always been a battleground for military strategists. In 1985, a provincial municipality was established with the approval of the State Council, with jurisdiction over Jiangshan City, Longyou, Changshan, Kaihua County, Kecheng District (county level) and Qujiang District (county level). The geological structure of Quzhou City belongs to the southern side of Jiangnan Ancient Continent and the northern edge of Cathaysia Ancient Continent, spanning two first-level structural units, with the Qiantang River Depression in the middle. The general terrain characteristics are high in the south and north, low in the central part, high in the west, and low in the east. The central part is the western half of the Jinqu Basin, the largest inland basin in Zhejiang Province, and gradually widens from west to east. Within the territory, plains account for 15%, hills account for 36%, and mountains account for 49%. Quzhou has a long history. As early as the Shang and Zhou dynasties, people lived here. In the Spring and Autumn Period, it was the Gumen Territory of the Yue State. During the Warring States Period, it belonged to the Chu Territory. In the Qin Dynasty, it belonged to the Kuaiji County. The county was established as Taimo, which was the beginning of the establishment of the county in Longyou. In the third year of Chuping (AD 192) of Emperor Xian of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Taimo was divided and Xin'an County was established, which was the beginning of the establishment of Qu County. In the 4th year of Wude (AD 621), Emperor Gaozu of the Tang Dynasty, Quzhou was established, marking the beginning of the establishment of Quzhou. Since then, Quzhou has been the seat of administrative agencies such as states, counties, roads, and prefectures in the past dynasties.

After the Revolution of 1911, Quzhou Prefecture was abolished and belonged to Jinhua Road. In 1927, the road was abolished and a two-level system of provinces and counties was implemented, with each county directly under the jurisdiction of Zhejiang Province. In 1935, Quzhou was changed into the Administrative Supervision Office of the Fifth District of the Province, with jurisdiction over eight counties: Quxian, Longyou, Jiangshan, Changshan, Kaihua, Shouchang, Suichang, and Chun'an. In 1946, the Quzhou Appeasement Office was established. In 1948, it was changed to the Third Provincial Commissioner's Office, which also had jurisdiction over eight counties in Jinhua.

The total area is 2019.48 square kilometers and the total population is 560,000. It has jurisdiction over 15 towns and 14 townships. Xujiang Town is the seat of the Municipal People's Government.

Changshan County is located in the west of Quzhou City. It borders Qu County to the east, Jiangshan to the south, Jiangshan and Yushan to the southwest, Kaihua to the northwest, and a short section to Chun'an in the northeast. Kaihua County is located in the northwest of Quzhou City.

It is connected to Changshan in the southeast, Chun'an in the northeast, Wuyuan, Dexing and Yushan in Jiangxi to the southwest, and Xiuning in Anhui in the north. Longyou County is located in the east of Quzhou City. It borders Jinhua to the east, Suichang to the south, Qu County to the west, Jiande to the north, and Lanxi to the northeast. The total population is 401,800 and the total area is 1,138.72 square kilometers. It has jurisdiction over 9 towns and 12 townships.
