West Lake is located in the west of Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. It is one of the first batch of national key scenic spots in mainland China and one of the top ten scenic spots in China. One of the main ornamental freshwater lakes in mainland China, it is one of the three famous lakes in the south of the Yangtze River, along with Xuanwu Lake in Nanjing and Nanhu Lake in Jiaxing.

During the Sui Dynasty, Qiantang County (Hangzhou) moved to the east bank of the lake and gradually changed its name to West Lake.
