Torch Festival

Torch Festival is a traditional festival of the Yi people with a long history. Regarding the origin of the Torch Festival, the village party branch secretary first told us a legendary story about a Yi child who dared to fight against the sky.

According to legend, in ancient times, when heaven and earth were connected, King Ntikuci was furious and paid tribute to the human world, and sent the demon Sriabi to the lower world for abuse. The Yi warrior Adibala led all the people to declare war on the devil. They held high torches and burned the only passage between heaven and earth, defeating and killing the devil. When the king heard the news, he was so angry that he spread insects on the ground and ate the crops and fruit trees. On June 24 of the lunar calendar, Attila and the angry Yi people set fire to all the insects. The king of heaven wanted to harm people again, but he had no choice but to give up because the way of heaven was burned. The ancestors of the Houyi people held the Torch Festival every year on the 24th of the sixth lunar month, which lasted for three days, to commemorate this victory festival and to eliminate disasters and promote good deeds. This festival integrates celebration, prayer and entertainment, and has become a traditional festival for the people in the Yi ethnic areas of Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi. In order to better inherit this traditional festival, in the spring of 1994, at the initiative of the Yi compatriots, the Shuicheng Pinghai Yi Cultural Park was established in Pinghai Village, Yushe Township, Shuicheng County. The Yushe Yi Torch Festival has become an important festival for all Yi people
