Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture has a long history. As far back as the Neolithic Age, there were ancestors of Bai, Yi and other ethnic minorities living here. Local governments such as Nanzhao State and Dali State appeared in the Tang and Song Dynasties respectively. In 1956, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture was established. Dali City, where the state capital is located, is the intersection of Yunnan-Myanmar Highway and Yunnan-Tibet Highway. It was an important transit point for the ancient Shushendu Road and the ancient tea-horse road. Now it is a central city, regional transportation hub and logistics center in western Yunnan Province.

geographical environment

Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture is located at the junction of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and Hengduan Mountains, with high terrain in the northwest and low terrain in the southeast. The landform is complex and diverse, with mountains and valleys to the west of Diancang Mountain, steep slopes of Zhongshan to the east of Diancang Mountain and Xiangyun to the west. The mountains in the territory mainly belong to Yunling Mountain and Nushan Mountain, and Diancang Mountain is located in the middle of the state, like an arch screen, towering and straight. Xueban Mountain at the junction of Jianchuan in the north and Lanping in Lijiang is the highest peak of the mountains in the state, with an altitude of 4,295 meters, and the lowest point is Hongqi Dam on the Nujiang River in Yunlong County, with an altitude of 73 meters.

The territory of Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture is bounded by the large fault along the line Laojun Mountain-Diancang Mountain-Ailao Mountain, which consists of two parts, namely, the Yangtze paraplatform area in the east and the Tibetan-Yunnan geosyncline fold area in the west. The Yangtze paraplatform area in the east, bounded by Erhai-Honghe deep fault in the west and extending into Chuxiong Prefecture in the east, is a part of the western margin of the Yangtze paraplatform. The Tibetan-Yunnan geosyncline fold area in the west is a vast area in the west and south of the state, bounded by Erhai-Honghe deep fault in the east and Nujiang and Lancang River valleys in the west, running through the state from north to south.
