The behind-the-scenes production of Arthur and His Mini Kingdom 2

Creative background

This film is more unconstrained in action production and more poetic in narrative. For example, the movie's flashback scenes let the audience know Princess Selena's past experience, which allows the audience to enter the inner world of the little princess and feel the rhythm of her life. In the first film, the audience has been observing this character through Arthur's eyes, and little is known about her. This time, you can truly enter her world of life.

In addition to several familiar main characters, this sequel has added many characters, and one of its major features is the large number of characters. Especially the new villains and unicorns, the director wants to make them more terrifying and aggressive. Pierre Buffin, the computer technician responsible for the 3D effects, said they even had to create images that stayed on the screen for less than five seconds. And the facial features of those existing characters have to be improved, because they are all beginning to look old.

The filming process

The film crew came to the reconstructed small village of Connaught in Normandy. In order to meet the requirements of the script, the crew expanded it to 40 square kilometers. Luc Besson and his chief set designer Hugo Tissandia recreated the social life of the entire village: churches, shops, supermarkets, garages, hardware stores, police stations, cinemas and fountains. These new elements are not found in the first part, and they build a complete village. A major challenge in building these came from the unpredictable weather in the Normandy region, which required the crew to build sets that were strong enough to withstand these conditions. Another challenge was given to the on-set shooting team. This sequel contains a considerable number of animal characters: bears, wolves, antelopes, wild boars, pine trees, rats, owls, stone martens, etc., and the entire group of animals can be captured on camera. It’s not easy to be obedient in the past.

Production Team

The technical production team of "Arthur and His Mini Kingdom 2" all come from BUF, a French stunt company. Luc Besson continued his cooperation with BUF, He said that BUF is a world-class stunt production company that will never lose to any company in the United States.

Post-production

What director Luc Besson is proud of is a pioneering work called vine technology, which combines three technologies: The imagery is combined with Freddie Highmore's raw footage as a backdrop, simple stunts like using models to get a close-up of the giant vines wrapping around Arthur, and pure 3D technology to make the scene look as real as possible. Directing these sequences proved to be quite difficult, especially the on-location portions where various glitches or unlucky weather conditions arose. Technical director Stefani Glück proved himself technically competent. Made a real contribution.

The storyboarding work in the film was handled by Anthony Ordazioli, who completed the storyboards for the two films "Arthur and His Little Kingdom" 1 and 2. Specifically, he worked directly on the platform of 3D motion capture software, gradually drawing out the shots that Luc Besson would shoot. These storyboard illustrations are then passed to the art team, who use them to create new characters.
