Strive to climb the ideal peak of life
-a student's report in Tsinghua.
Hello, students:
Today, I am honored to stand here and give you a report on high school study. I will explain some problems and solutions we will encounter in high school through some examples according to what I have seen, felt and thought in my three years in high school and college. I hope everyone can learn from my report, avoid detours, set goals for themselves, strengthen their confidence and finally get into an ideal university.
How do we set goals and establish ideals?
The number of students admitted to key universities in our middle school is 600 to 700 every year, so after one year, you may all enter first-class key universities or first-class famous universities. I was confused when I was a freshman: my goal was to get into a good university, but I wanted to get into a good university. Why do you have to take the road of reading? The answer of * * * is "for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation", the answer of many parents is "for glorifying ancestors", and the answer of many teachers is "for your future, the writer Zheng said," I will be a writer as soon as I graduate from primary school ",Bill?" Gates said that dropping out of college can make you the richest man in the world. After three years' training in Tsinghua, my answer now is that reading is the shortcut to our success.
Here, I'll give you a few examples to prove this point: Bill Liu, a senior in the Department of Electronics in Tsinghua, won the first prize in the National Challenge Cup Science and Technology Competition for College Students last year through his one-year research, and his patent "Human Biosensor Chip" was bought by a company for 3 million yuan. You see, a senior undergraduate is already worth millions, and there are many such examples in Tsinghua.
Deng Xiaoping once said, "Science and technology are the primary productive forces". That's right. Let me give you another example: I saw in the market the other day that the lowest price of the red laser pen we all played was RMB in 3 yuan. A project "Green Semiconductor Laser Pen" made by our Information Optoelectronic Department, now we spend $200 to buy one in the United States. In fact, the cost was only 10 yuan, but we did it. If others don't, we can decide everything.
I checked Forbes magazine and found that 100% of the self-made billionaires under the age of 35 in Chinese mainland started from science and technology. Speaking of this, liberal arts students may be a little unhappy. It's all about technology. What shall we do? Don't worry, I have another example here: this student is a doctoral student of Professor Zhu Rongji of Tsinghua Institute of Economics and Management-a liberal arts student, and now he is the vice president of China Merchants Bank, only 29 years old this year. He was promoted by President Zhu Rongji because he solved the bad debts of CCB in a city in Hebei for more than ten years in one month. His reuse depends on his excellent professional knowledge and skills.
There are many such examples. They took the shortcut of reading, and it took several years to reach the height that others might take decades to reach. Because the first-class universities will give you comprehensive professional knowledge, teach you ways to learn new knowledge quickly and give you a broad perspective of observing the world. This is what I call "the road to study is the shortcut to our success". You can't spend too much energy on your study.
We should now understand what our efforts are for today, and we should also strengthen our faith and strive to be admitted to a first-class university. The question now is, what kind of university are we going to enter?
Now many students may not have a concept in mind. Your grades can indeed be admitted to a good university, but you must know the gap between different universities. The style of study, teachers and research funds of famous universities are incomparable to those of general key universities. The 30th university in China is too bad for you. I hope you can set your goal higher.
The students present here now have high and low grades. Perhaps the top students want to target Tsinghua, Peking University and China University of Science and Technology, while the junior students may think that Hebei University is not bad. In my opinion, students should at least aim at Fudan University or Shanghai Jiaotong University. Don't doubt your ability. Take my own example. When I entered the first year of high school, my grade was 140, and later I was ranked 200. But I always thought that I would be admitted to Tsinghua in the future, and I made unremitting efforts towards this goal. Many of my current college classmates have my experience. Faith is a wonderful thing. When you know in your bones that you are Tsinghua's level, you will show Tsinghua-like qualities everywhere in your actions.
Now I think everyone should know their future, so what should we do now?
Several problems I met in high school and their solutions
Here, I summed up several annoying problems encountered in high school. I couldn't figure it out at the time, but now I want to understand. I want to share it with you here. I hope students will take fewer detours.
The problem of favoritism
When I was in high school, I didn't like politics, history and geography, because these subjects didn't pass the college entrance examination, and I might never use them. Maybe some students hate physics, chemistry and mathematics. Some students only like one subject, but they don't do well in other professional courses. But why does the "idiot" Ministry of Education want us to learn things that a generation can't use? It is no exaggeration to say that chemistry and biology were the best subjects I studied in high school, but after studying electronics in Tsinghua for three years, we didn't need them at all. I have reason to believe that I will never balance a chemical equation in my life. In the words of many people, these two courses are the stepping stones to the college entrance examination. I didn't understand why we needed to study these courses at that time, and I believe many of us here didn't understand either. I told you the following example, and you should understand.
When I was a freshman, we had a compulsory course called Mechanical Drawing-the main content was to draw screws on drawings. We are majoring in electronics. Why are we drawing this? Indeed, since that semester, we have not been exposed to relevant content. Many of our classmates were very dissatisfied at that time. Our dean told us a story to calm their anger. He once took a senior undergraduate to do a graduation project (16 weeks), and his topic for this student was to write a new computer application. This computer structure is neither von Neumann system nor Harvard system. The computer language it uses is completely unconventional. In the first week, the teacher first gave this classmate a related book for him to understand. After a week of hard work, I figured it out. This is the case from the second week to the eighth week. Programming starts from the ninth week to the fifteenth week. Write a paper in the last week. This classmate successfully completed the task. When he graduated, his tutor asked him, "Which course did you use for your graduation design? Calculus? " "No" "Linear Algebra?" "No" "C language?" "No" "Microcomputer principle?" "No ... English at most, because programming is all in English." "What did you do in college for four years? The courses you study are useless. " This classmate is very stupid. But the teacher asked, "If you are a high school graduate, can you finish this project in 16 weeks?" "Obviously impossible" "That's right. What you have learned in four years of college is the ability to learn knowledge. You have to study every book I gave you four years ago for a semester, and now you can fully understand it in a week. "
This story inspired me a lot. What we have learned now may never be used in the future, but the various learning methods and thinking perspectives you have summed up when studying various subjects will accompany you all your life. When you encounter new problems, you can use your previous experience to quickly sum up the solutions to the new problems. Therefore, I am very responsible to tell you now: don't be partial to the subject, any subject is very important to you.
(2) Never say that you have done your best.
Some students feel that they have worked hard, but they just can't improve their grades any more. He comforted himself, "I have tried my best." I remember a line in the movie Adventure Island: "Never say that you have done your best!" Personally, I feel that when you still have the strength to say "I tried my best", you didn't try your best at all. I think human potential is infinite. Let me give you an example of myself. See how potential they have.
When I was in high school, physical education was particularly poor. Running 1000 meters is terrible. I have never failed. I believe that many students here also hate the standard of this sport. After arriving in Tsinghua, in the first class in physical education class, the teacher told us that it is Tsinghua's tradition to be good at sports. We have to run a 3000-meter long-distance race every year, but we will not be allowed to graduate after running, and we will be disqualified from the postgraduate entrance examination. What shall we do? Anyone who comes to Tsinghua doesn't want to get a diploma. Most of my classmates are as poor in sports as I am. So every night 10: 30, after our self-study classroom closed, there were more people on the playground in Tsinghua. Run for half an hour and then go back to the dormitory to continue studying. After practicing for a semester, I lost 40 pounds. It only took me 12 minutes and 56 seconds to run the 3000m in the final exam, and the fattest person in our class ran 15 points. I remember complaining to my PE teacher in high school: "I have tried my best, and 1000 meters just failed." It's funny now. I think Tsinghua's motto of "constantly striving for self-improvement" has a great influence on me. When you feel that you have done your best, if you persist for a while, you will often break through your limits and awaken your potential. The research of thinking science shows that the human brain can put all the information in library books all over the world, but the human mind has only developed 7% to 8% so far. So here, I hope that students must work hard and try again, and never say that they have tried their best. What is success? People don't believe what you can do, and you have already done it. This is called success.
(C) How to learn high school curriculum well
Then the last question, never say that you have tried your best, so how should you work hard? When I was in high school, I heard many reports about learning methods, and I also introduced my learning methods to others many times. But it was not until my sophomore year that I really understood how to learn knowledge well.
In my sophomore year, we had a course called Analog Electronic Circuits, which was very difficult. Our teacher, Academician Gao, once told us: "Learning analog electronic circuits has the same trick as learning other disciplines, with eight words-machine-sea tactics and machine-sea tactics." I was confused. When I was a child, my teacher always said that I should talk about methods instead of doing problems all the time. Why do academicians say that? After several things, I understood the meaning of these eight words.
Our class has a champion in the college entrance examination in Shandong Province, who got 7 13 (out of 750). I asked him how you learned to be so awesome. He said: When I was in high school, I did all the problem sets in the market.
If you think the provincial champion is too far away from us, I will give another example of a student who ranked 76th in the college entrance examination in Henan Province to see how he did the problem. His IQ will not be higher than all of you here, because he has worked hard in the Department of Electronics in Tsinghua. He said that he had done the six main subjects in the college entrance examination at least five times.
Therefore, I think Academician Gao is still right, and the sea tactics are definitely a good way to learn high school courses well. I have my own experience. For example, when I was in senior three, I couldn't make mistakes in my English composition. I made 50 mistakes in a row over the weekend, and I almost didn't miss any mistakes in my English exam. You may think that college students seldom do problems. I don't know about other universities, but it's no exaggeration to say that I do more questions in Tsinghua every year than when I was in the third year of high school.
Now the students will definitely say that it is easy to want to have a naval battle, but where is the time? This reminds me of the following question.
(4) How to squeeze out time
Next, I'll tell you about a classmate from Hubei who spent his time in a high school in Tsinghua: he was in a key high school in a county, and all his classmates lived on campus. He has three days off every Spring Festival, and the rest have half a day off every month. There are 9 days off every year. I don't think our middle school dare to be so abnormal, but those students in Hubei really waste too much time less than us, which also leads to their foundation being much better than ours, and also leads to Tsinghua preferring to recruit 30 students in Hubei rather than one in Hebei. Looking back on my high school, I regret it very much now. If I am as fast as my classmates in the south, I will win the top prize in the college entrance examination. Students, we are no longer children, we shoulder heavy responsibilities. If we still spend a lot of time on entertainment and rest, when we enter the university and go to the society, we will feel great pressure from people in southern provinces and cities.
So how do we find time to ask?
First of all, personally, I think everyone here is walking too slowly. What I saw was that everyone was talking and laughing and walking slowly. If you go to Tsinghua, you can see that all the students take cars and almost all walk at a trot. We don't need to waste time on these meaningless things. As soon as you enter the classroom from the school gate, you can read more books and do one more question than others. After a long time, you will have an absolute advantage in time.
Secondly, our ten minutes between classes are also very precious, which I didn't realize until the next semester of senior three. Make full use of ten minutes between classes, you can squeeze in nearly two hours every day and do one more set of questions than others. More importantly, we'd better not watch TV. When I was in high school, I had to watch TV every day. At that time, I mainly wanted to save face. I watch sports games, watch the evening news and chat with others, and I watch TV dramas and talk to others. Pretending not to be diligent all day but getting good grades. In the final analysis, I hope others will say that I am smart. My current view is that those who are said to be "smart but just don't study" are the most stupid people. Whether you really have a superior IQ or not, if we spend too much energy on things that have nothing to do with our future, it is our greatest irresponsibility. Many of my classmates in Tsinghua didn't watch TV during high school, including the Spring Festival Gala, and some even haven't watched TV since junior high school. Now at school, we have televisions in every dormitory. But the TV in our dormitory almost never turns on. Nobody watched the European Cup after the final exam. After the exam, everyone didn't rest and relax. They are all preparing for next semester's courses, preparing for TOEFL and GRE exams, or learning some practical skills. What everyone wants is to use other people's rest time to enrich themselves and give themselves an advantage in the future competition.
Students should not think too much about students in Tsinghua. Among the students in Tsinghua, the students with superior IQ account for at most a quarter of the total number of students. The IQ of other students will not be much higher than that of all of you here. What they have more than you is only their attitude towards the future. Tsinghua students have a very powerful spiritual strength. They can give up any temptation for their own goals. Even on New Year's Eve, the self-study classrooms in Tsinghua will be overcrowded. In the words of an American professor, "Students in Tsinghua have no Sundays, no Sundays and no holidays!" Students in Tsinghua don't have Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. It is this spirit that created the myth of Tsinghua. Otherwise, it is difficult to get into Tsinghua.
Some students may say: You're right, but it's hard for us to stick to it, three minutes at most. I don't want to work hard after that. Ok, let's discuss how to make my blood boil.
(5) Find pressure for yourself
I talked to Mr. Xu, a professor in the Department of Precision Instruments in Tsinghua University. He said, "I think the students in the Department of Electronics are under too much pressure." Professor Xu said, "How does Tsinghua train talents? It is pressed out! " Yes, great pressure will have the motivation of giants. Some students said: "The pressure of high school students is already too great." I think the pressure in our high school is too small now. To tell the truth, some students in Tsinghua don't like studying that much. For example, I'm a little tired of learning. But Tsinghua's requirements are extremely strict. In four years, as long as one subject fails, you will be disqualified from scientific research promotion, and you will drop out of school if you fail in three subjects. So the elimination rate of some departments in Tsinghua is 30%. It's terrible, so we all have to study hard.
Even more disgusting than us is MIT in the United States. My freshman counselor is now studying at MIT. He sent me an email saying that in his first class at school, the professor announced the assessment requirements to them: "In my class, the final score is an A, two B's, half C and half D". That is to say, half of them will fail. The elimination rate of MIT is higher than that of Tsinghua, which is why MIT students will be hired by major multinational companies with high salaries as long as they get diplomas.
Let me give you a few more examples to illustrate how incredible things people can do under great pressure.
When I was a sophomore, we had a two-week summer semester. On Monday morning of the first week, we had a two-hour class in a classroom and learned the VHDL language of computers. After class, the teacher asked us to write an opu with a frequency of 30M before Friday. Everyone is crazy because they don't know what he said in the morning. Later, we learned that it takes a semester to study this course in the electronic department of other universities. But the teacher made it very clear that if you can't do it, you will fail. So everyone frantically ran to the library to borrow books, went back to sleep and forgot to read them. On the first day, they couldn't understand them, but the next day they understood a little. On the third day, they made up several simple programs during the day and started formal programming at night until three o'clock. On Thursday, they made up for two days, added an all-night shift, and passed the acceptance test at 8: 00 on Friday morning. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief, but the next Monday morning, the teacher told us to hand in the ultrasonic range finder on Wednesday afternoon. Two crazy all-nighters, I handed in the ultrasonic range finder on Wednesday afternoon. Before that, we had no idea that we could do so many things in such a short time, but we finished it under great pressure.
For another example, our freshman English class requires us to recite 500 words a week. I don't think it's possible. I only got 43 points in the first exam. I can't help it I will get up at 5 o'clock every morning and recite words until 7 o'clock before going to class. Finally, I can recite them. So under great pressure, we can really exert our great potential.
Here, I give you a suggestion, that is, try to find some pressure for yourself. For example, it is stipulated that 500 questions must be done in a week, and even if the score in the exam does not exceed 140, it will be considered as a failure. Don't think these are too much. If you really swear to be admitted to a first-class university, I think this is what we must do, and now high school students in the south do the same.
(6) Emotional problems
In high school, we also have to face emotional problems: I believe that the head teacher and the principal have mentioned this matter to everyone more than once, and they are not allowed to fall in love after repeated orders. Personally, I think our high school relationship is very good; In high school, I like to sit at the same table with beautiful girls, and I also like to listen to the screams of all the girls in my class when I play basketball. When physical education class plays basketball, if there are girls watching the game, I will try my best to make some beautiful moves. If the teacher transfers the girl I like better to my seat, I will pay great attention to my personal image and speak less rudely. That feeling is still very sweet: mainly because the pressure of study makes me unable to be distracted, and I think it is too much trouble to fall in love in high school. Tell you about my classmates who fell in love in high school-first of all, you have to sneak around without being known by teachers and parents. But it will be found out and then it will be talked to again and again. Finally bored, no sweet feeling. After I entered the university, the whole world broke up. I haven't heard of any successful cases myself.
Even in universities, couples in Tsinghua basically broke up in their senior year, so many of our college students feel that it is better to study hard than bother to find a girlfriend, so Tsinghua has an undergraduate monk to study the monk's statement. It is these students who live an ascetic life that make Tsinghua's style of study world-famous. At our age, it is much more meaningful to learn more about settling down than to seek those short-lived sweets. My advice to you is that we might as well be high school monks for three years, and never find ourselves wasting too much time and energy at the end and feel guilty and worried.
(7) Don't complain that the teacher is not good.
Don't complain about the teacher when our grades in a certain subject are not satisfactory. I can say without exaggeration that our high school teachers are very good, at least they are very responsible and dedicated. Let me tell you something about my experience in Tsinghua, and you will understand. Teachers in Tsinghua are all good at research, but few teachers teach undergraduates well. Once in a class of microcomputer principle, the teacher said that today I went back to use Protel to simulate the circuit in class. Students say that we have heard of this software for the first time in my life. The teacher said, "This is the necessary software for electronic engineers" and turned around and left. No way, we went back to the library for three days and finally learned this software. Another math class, the teacher asked us to go back and draw a three-dimensional figure with MATLAB. The students all said that they had never studied-this seems to be a compulsory course for the department of mathematics, and the teacher only said, "Never studied?" Go back to school! "We stayed in the library for a few days, basically understand. Many computer tools we use now, teachers all acquiesce that we have mastered them completely, and no one has taught you what to do, which is not normal. So our classmates, when you feel that any science is not very good, you must not complain about the objective conditions. Your own efforts are the cornerstone of success. When you always complain about objective conditions, success is getting farther and farther away from you.
Health is the capital of everything.
If students really want to work hard for their ideals, I tell you, they must exercise well. Tsinghua's slogan is "Work for the health of the motherland for 50 years". The reason why physical education class in Tsinghua is so demanding and strict is to force everyone to have a good exercise. Tsinghua has a really good sports tradition. When we first went to college, our health was really poor and it was easy to get tired of learning. Now 20 people in our class have signed up for this year's Beijing International Marathon (there are only 5,000 college students in China and 3,000 in Tsinghua)-one is to experience it, and the other is to have confidence in their endurance. Personally, I can stay up for a few nights now. We must never ignore the importance of exercise.
My suggestion is: you must do daily exercise during recess, and physical education class should also do hard exercise-I suggest you practice long-distance running more, and we'd better run 1000m every day. Believe it, when you go to a first-class university and need to stay up late to do research, you will find out how important the health foundation you laid in high school is.
(9) Some learning skills
As I said before, the ultimate skill we learn is to do more problems. Now I'm going to tell you some little learning experiences that I got from my college classmates. They are easy, but hard to stick to.
The first is the language, the pronunciation and typos of Chinese characters, the use of idioms and the analysis of classical Chinese. My skill is to find a Xinhua dictionary, an idiom dictionary and an ancient Chinese appreciation dictionary. Read five pages a day, not more than half an hour. You still have two years before the college entrance examination. If you insist, I believe you can read these dictionaries several times before the college entrance examination, which is very beneficial to the related topics of college entrance examination Chinese.
Then English. You can use this holiday to memorize all the words in Band 4. This holiday is not enough. You can take advantage of more holidays. It's not difficult for us, as long as we put our heart into it. Again, believe in your ability. Now many students in Tsinghua got full marks after preparing for GRE for two months, and memorized 20,000 words in two months. A huge vocabulary is of great benefit to our college entrance examination English Don't doubt your ability. Zhang Liyong, a migrant worker from Tsinghua 15 canteen, studies English in her spare time. TOEFL 630 (out of 670), Gao Feisheng 600, Tsinghua, not easy. Talk to him often when eating. He tries to find time to learn English every day. His basic English education can't compare with everyone here-migrant workers have almost no formal education, but now he has been admitted to Peking University. Look at the power of many a mickle makes a mickle.
Some of my hopes for all of you here
After listening to this report, students may think that I have exaggerated in many places and can't do it at all. And I said, as long as you have the belief that you won't give up if you don't take the famous brand exam, I believe that with your IQ, you definitely have the strength to impact the first-class famous brand. At present, students in other senior high schools in our province still study in the original way. As long as you study in South High School from now on, you will have a great advantage over other high school students in Hebei by the time of the final college entrance examination. I hope that after one year, at least some of you will be admitted to Tsinghua Peking University. If you stick to it and do as I say, and the people around you don't, you will find that your grades will definitely advance by leaps and bounds in the end.
Finally, I want to give you a few words of encouragement.
The first sentence is Professor Zhu Rongji's request to Tsinghua students: "Be a student and pursue perfection". There is no problem with your grades, but our goal is a famous university, which requires you not to make mistakes in details and not to lose grades that you shouldn't have lost. The pursuit of perfection requires us to seriously study our own problems even if we get 99 points in the exam. Because one point difference in the college entrance examination may ruin your dream.
The second sentence is Tsinghua's school motto: "Strive for self-improvement, be virtuous and carry things". I hope the students here will not shrink from any difficulties. Even temporary disappointment can never erase the passion you won. At the same time, we should also keep a correct attitude, respect teachers and competitors.
No matter what your grades are these two years, you still have one year of high school, which is enough! Go ahead,
student Your destiny is in your own hands. Hurry up and ask questions from now on. Leave this classroom and run.
