The best costume design "Red Cliff" The story of the film "Red Cliff" took place in the thirteenth year of Jian 'an in the late Eastern Han Dynasty (that is, in 208 AD). At that time, Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty was in charge of state affairs, but the local strongmen were separated and the war continued year after year.

Cao Cao, the prime minister of the dynasty, was ambitious and prepared to attack Liu Bei. Cao Cao's ultimate goal is to eliminate all separatist forces, abolish Emperor Xian of Han Dynasty, become emperor on his own and unify the whole country.

When Cao Cao's soldiers were besieged, Liu Bei sent Zhuge Liang, his strategist, to Wu Dong to persuade Sun Quan of Wu Dong to unite against Cao Cao. Zhuge Liang met Zhou Yu, the military leader and commander-in-chief of Sun Quan. They decided to form an alliance on behalf of Liu Bei and Sun Quan respectively, * * * against Cao.

Cao Cao was furious when he learned that Sun and Liu had formed an alliance. He led 830,000 (actually 230,000) land and water troops south in an attempt to kill two birds with one stone and kill Sun and Liu at the same time. Cao Jun camped in the Wulin on the north bank of the Yangtze River, facing the south bank of Chibi, where Sun and Liu were stationed.

Sun Liu's allied forces are in short supply of grain and grass, and their forces are obviously at a disadvantage. However, Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang adopted a series of strategies to wage a land-water war with Cao Cao, and finally defeated Cao Jun with less. Cao Cao's 2000 warships were set on fire, and only a few hundred of more than 800,000 soldiers escaped. This is the world-famous Battle of Red Cliffs. The course of China's history has completely changed.

In the Ming Dynasty, Luo Guanzhong's novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms made the Red Cliff War and other stories of the Three Kingdoms widely circulated. Although this novel was written more than 700 years ago, it still has a wide audience in the whole Asian region today, and there are countless cartoons and video games based on this novel.

Director John Woo has been obsessed with the theme of Chibi War for more than twenty years. But at that time, neither the film production technology nor the film consumption market could support and accommodate such a large-scale film. In the summer of 2004, Wu Yusen's gold medal partner and producer Zhang came to Beijing for the first time. During their trip to Chinese mainland, they saw that the time was ripe for filming Red Cliff, and they started financing and filming.

playwriting

It is a very challenging thing to adapt the story of Battle of Red Cliffs into a screenplay. The difficulties are mainly manifested in three aspects.

First, this real historical event happened in 208 AD 1800 years ago, but it was not until the publication of Luo Guanzhong's novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms more than 700 years ago that the story of the Three Kingdoms was widely circulated. But in order to strengthen the drama of the story, this novel falsifies many historical facts.

For example, the image of Zhuge Liang, Liu Bei's strategist, is a man-made myth. Zhuge Liang in the novel is resourceful and can give orders, so that Sun Liu's allied troops defeated Cao Jun in Chibi. In fact, Zhuge Liang was 27 years old when he was in Battle of Red Cliffs. He is an agricultural scholar and has just been recruited as a counselor by Liu Bei. He just used some astrological knowledge to predict the weather changes.

The real hero of this campaign was Zhou Yu, the commander-in-chief of Wu Dong, but he was portrayed as a narrow-minded and jealous warrior in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and was finally angered by Zhuge Liang.

Director John Woo tried to restore the true colors of history, so the script was mainly adapted from the history book The History of the Three Kingdoms written by Chen Shou and other documents. However, in order to appease the loyal readers of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, he still extracted some entertaining materials and details from the novel, among which Zhuge Liang borrowed an arrow from a straw boat.

Secondly, the target audience of the film Red Cliff is not limited to Asia, but all countries and regions in the world. The novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms has become a classic in China, and it is still popular today even after more than 700 years. Its huge readership is not only spread in Chinese mainland, Hongkong and Singapore, but also widely known in other Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea. There are countless comic books and cartoons derived from this novel. Glorious company, a famous Japanese game manufacturer, has also launched dozens of classic games based on the story of the Three Kingdoms.

Of course, you can't miss the generals Zhao Yun, Zhang Fei and Guan Yu when making a movie about the Three Kingdoms. This Guan Gong Guan Yunchang, in particular, is still worshipped as a god in many parts of Asia. But to western audiences, so many heroes with names sound the same. A senior official of a big Hollywood company even suggested that the heroic deeds of Sun Liujun and the generals should all be recorded in one person's head.

Due to the large number of heroes and the different battles before the Chibi War, the script of the film is very spectacular. If a western audience appreciates a minister for four hours, it really needs great patience to understand China war movies (English subtitles, Chinese pronunciation).

The final solution is to divide the film into two parts when it is released in Asia, and release it in different periods. The rest of the world was compiled into an episode, which was launched in the name of John Woo's action movie.

Third, the story of the Three Kingdoms is widely known in Asia. Every reader has his own interpretation of the plot and characters, especially the screenwriter. During the two and a half years from July 2004 to the beginning of 2007, John Woo invited China's top screenwriters such as Reed and Zou Jingzhi to write Red Cliff, but none of them satisfied him. Finally, he had to go into battle in person. First, he cooperated with Khan Chan, a Hong Kong screenwriter, to sort out the outline of the story, and then he cooperated with Zheng Guo to write the characters and details. Zheng Guo was present throughout the filming process, preparing to fine-tune the lines and dialogues according to the director's requirements.

Since 2004, the producers have searched for excellent screenwriters, brainstormed and determined the initial script outline. Battle of Red Cliffs's story is divided into six sections (20 14 adapted for Battle of Red Cliffs Game), which are Liu Bei's kindness to the people, Er Qiao's sacrifice for justice, Kong Zhi Zhi's inspiration to Zhou Yu, and Zhou Yu's murder with a knife. Director John Woo was not satisfied after reading it. He hoped that the characters in Battle of Red Cliffs would change: Liu Bei was no longer weak, Cao Cao was no longer treacherous, and Zhou Yu was no longer narrow-minded.

In 2006, John Woo invited Reid, another famous screenwriter in the film circle, to polish the existing script, which was revised to the ninth draft by Reid. John Woo's "ambition" is obvious. "I don't want to make an action movie or a martial arts movie, but I want to make a magnificent epic movie."

John Woo hopes that the final story will "combine Chinese and Western cultures", "excite China people who know this history, interest foreigners who don't know this history, and make it a truly international" Three Kingdoms ". Wu Yusen also stressed that the reason why the script has been revised so much is because the relationship between the story and the characters is very complicated. " Early tired of history, limited to some historical facts. Finally, I jumped out and slowly liberated my mind. In contrast, the contribution of the Three Kingdoms to the script is much greater than that of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. "

The director's explanation

We have all seen Hollywood blockbusters and were deeply moved by their grand ideas and touching voices. And all kinds of China films are also favored by audiences all over the world, including martial arts films, action films and drama films. However, China's epic films in ancient costume, which were shot with the techniques and artistic techniques of Hollywood blockbusters, are rare. China's films have always carried many cultural heritages of China, including the spirit of martial arts. Through movies, we can express spiritual sustenance and cultural demands at different levels. So I always hope that I can change the routine of martial arts films, but shoot an epic feature film that reflects heroes from all walks of life during the Three Kingdoms period in a dramatic way. I have always had this dream since I first came into contact with the story of the Three Kingdoms.

The story of Chibi took place 1800 years ago. Battle of Red Cliffs is of great historical significance, because it is the most famous and classic war example in the history of China. I believe that with our smart and dedicated team and the latest film technology, we will be able to make an epic film about the China War that is no less than a Hollywood blockbuster. Through real shooting and post-stunt production, we almost perfectly restored the thrilling war scenes in ancient China. This is unprecedented in previous China films.

When shooting this film, my goal is to transcend the cultural and historical background, let the western audience appreciate the Asian version of Troy, and let the eastern audience find a new perspective from this familiar story. At the same time, I also want to prove to the world that we China people are fully capable of making Hollywood blockbusters-level China films.

For me, what attracts me most about the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms is not the mythical characters, but the true heroism shown by these characters. There are many different forms of heroes in our world. I like flesh and blood and humanity. There are many similarities between the characters of the Three Kingdoms and the heroes in my mind. I firmly believe that human emotions are universal and are not maintained by cultural background. Morality, ethics and friendship are respected in the West, as well as in the East. Although the expressions are different, our emotions are basically the same.

Because of this, I deliberately ignored many details in the novel when shooting Red Cliff. Our huge cast comes from different countries, including China, the United States, Japan and South Korea. These people from the east and the west have learned a lot from each other in cooperation.

During the filming of "Red Cliff", I also saw that many young people in China were enthusiastic about film making. They work hard and study with an open mind. We overcame the difficulties caused by bad weather and successfully completed the war scenes of several major wars. I was deeply moved by the professionalism and unity shown by our team.

At the same time, our shooting has been strongly supported by government departments at all levels in China. I firmly believe that China films are on the right track and will rise on the world stage in the near future, conquering audiences all over the world with their diverse themes and attractive movie stars.

Making Red Cliff was unthinkable only a few years ago, because the technology and resources at that time could not support such a large-scale film. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks and respect to the investors from Chinese mainland, Japanese, Korean and * *, and thank you for helping me realize my dream. I hope the audience all over the world can appreciate and love this movie, because I know that movies have no borders. Oriental audiences like excellent western movies, and western audiences can also enjoy our splendid history and culture in the East. Therefore, I hope that when you watch Red Cliff, it is not a China blockbuster or a Hollywood blockbuster, but a world blockbuster. spot for photography

In fact, Battle of Red Cliffs took place in Wulin, the base camp of Cao Cao's amphibious army on the north bank of the Yangtze River, instead of Sun Liu's allied troops stationed in Chibi on the other side of the river.

Folk and academic circles have different opinions about the specific location of Battle of Red Cliffs. In the past 1800 years, great changes have taken place in the direction and length of the Yangtze River, and the related place names have also changed several times.

1998, Puyin City, Hubei Province officially changed its name to chibi city, which was obviously intended to be related to the most famous battle in the history of China. However, even if this is the place where Battle of Red Cliffs is located, the endless stream of ships on the river is enough to deter the director, not to mention the terrain there is far from what John Woo imagined.

In order to choose a suitable location, since the summer of 2004, the film crew has visited 14 provinces for field trips. Director Wu Yusen and producer Zhang personally visited Hubei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hebei and Yunnan provinces, and finally took a fancy to the Angezhuang Reservoir in Yixian County, Hebei Province, which is only three hours' drive from Beijing. When he looked around on the wide water in a yacht, he suddenly fell in love with an open land on the shore. Wulin, where Cao Ying is in the film, can be built there.

However, he encountered three thorny problems. In the film, Wulin is located on the north bank of the Yangtze River, but there is no similar place in Chibi on the other side. The car of the film crew can't get in because there is no decent road there; Although the location is suitable, the terrain is too flat.

In this regard, John Woo had to choose another location to build the exterior of Chibi and connect it with the Wulin here through later stunt production. In addition, a decent road was specially built to lead to the nearby expressway. In order to solve the problem of flat terrain, John Woo ordered people to build a high slope about 12 meters high, with an area as big as two football fields, and built a camp in Cao Jun on it, and also built a watchtower at the top of the slope.

Although the water in Angezhuang Reservoir is used to irrigate farmland, the surrounding land still belongs to the scope of environmental protection. The construction of Tai Po has been specially approved by the local government. So, a hillside several kilometers away was moved to the edge of the reservoir by Gong Yu, and the new soil was compacted bit by bit. The whole project lasted for several months. It was the summer of 2006, when the script had not yet taken shape and there was no money for filming. John Woo and Zhang did take some risks. In the end, the adventure paid off enormously. It is this high platform that endowed a generation of fierce Cao Cao with some majesty of ruling the world, and also became the visual focus of the whole war.

Props and costumes

Compared with choosing scenes and actors, it is much easier to choose art and fashion designers, because no one is more suitable than Ye Jintian who won the Oscar.

After Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Ye Jintian from Hongkong participated in the art and costume design of two large-scale mainland movies, one was The Promise directed by Chen Kaige and the other was The Banquet directed by Xiaogang Feng.

Ye Jintian is not only a master of visual arts, but also has rich experience in large-scale film operation. During the filming of the film Red Cliff, the number of artists once reached 1000, including technicians, carpenters, bricklayers, tailors, props and even shipbuilders.

After studying the script with director John Woo, Ye Jintian first set out to design the sketches of the main scenes, because the film focused on these wars, and then drew the renderings. At the same time, Ye Jintian and his team have done a lot of research on historical materials and learned about the buildings, costumes, warships, weapons and props that may appear in the film. This is because the idea of director John Woo is to be faithful to history in details as much as possible.

Ye Jintian believes that the most difficult thing in Red Cliff is the unity of overall style. Cultural relics in the Three Kingdoms period are rare. And our understanding of the Three Kingdoms comes from the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In order to increase readability, this novel has invented many legendary stories. Director John Woo hopes to make a version that is more faithful to history and different from the novel. He paid more attention to Zhou Yu's role in commanding the allied forces to resist Cao. Therefore, his version is a romantic adaptation of the novel. Today's audience has never seen the ancient water army in China fighting, burning warships, and shooting arrows by borrowing grass boats. So although the scene we are going to shoot today looks familiar, such a large-scale shooting is unprecedented.

We must rebuild these large-scale historical sites one by one and give them the rhythm of life. I consider it from two aspects. First, it should be large in scale and imposing, just like those representative Chinese paintings, and it should be atmospheric. Second, we must pay attention to details and be accurate in everything. So I spent a lot of time studying the existing cultural relics handed down from the Three Kingdoms period. With the details, the designed things come alive. And many details are unique to that era. Things in the Han dynasty are dignified and elegant, and the details are beautiful. So we pay special attention to its accuracy when designing these details.

We consulted experts in all aspects of history, including architecture, military, law, weapons and clothing; And studied the different lifestyles of aristocrats and ordinary people at that time. I also made a special trip to Japan to consult Japanese experts on the history of the Three Kingdoms. I learned some new knowledge about making armor and weapons there, which was very helpful to us.

Chibi tells the story of Wei, Shu and Wu before the Eastern Han Dynasty. At that time, wars continued year after year, but in fact, soldiers from different countries did not have much difference in clothing. Moreover, this film is mainly about generals and military advisers, so I refer to the costumes of literati at that time and process them in strict accordance with modern suit making techniques. So the effect on the big screen is luxurious and gentlemanly. In fact, it combines the characteristics of ancient intellectuals and aristocratic costumes.

Armor didn't become popular until the Jin Dynasty, so Cao Cao was the only one wearing all-metal armor in the film. Explanation Note: There is an error in the explanation here. Armor became popular from the Warring States period, and troops were equipped in batches, but it did not replace leather armor. It was not until Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty that the rate of armored equipment in the army was much higher than that of leather armor, not to mention the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty more than 200 years later. From the carrier collection in the four years of Yongzheng in the Western Han Dynasty, we can know that the armored armor was heavily equipped with the Han army. From ordinary soldiers to generals, the wooden slips unearthed from the Han Tomb in Yinwan systematically recorded the types and quantities of weapons and equipment stored in the county armory in the four years of Yongzheng in the Western Han Dynasty (before 13). The profound changes in tactics and tactics in the Han Dynasty, strong crossbows, armored riding equipment and improved new steel weapons, long-range aiming technology marked by crossbows, and cooperative combat technology of riding and multifunctional chariots represented by stirrups not only changed the face of war in this period, but also greatly changed the composition of arms in the Han Dynasty. For details, please refer to Baidu: Auto Collection of Arsenal for Forever Four Years.

The movie Red Cliff has a tortuous plot and a strong sense of rhythm. The barracks are strewn at random, which increases the visual tension. Cao Ying criss-crosses, while Wu Dong's camp is more elegant, showing the respective strength of the warring parties.

Wu Yusen organically combines the real story with the fictional plot, adding a refreshing color to the classic hero image.

Investment and scale

The film "Red Cliff" costs as much as 80 million US dollars, or 560 million RMB, making it the largest investment in China film so far. When producer Zhang contacted China Film Group Corporation for the first time, Chairman Han Sanping immediately expressed his full support. In August, 2006, China Film Group signed a financing and distribution agreement with the American Lion Mountain Production Company on the film Red Cliff. Lion Mountain Production Company is jointly owned by John Woo and Zhang and headquartered in Los Angeles, USA.

Shortly thereafter, * *' s Central Entertainment, Japanese Aihui Entertainment, China orange sky entertainment, and Korean Showbox stepped in one after another, each bearing a considerable proportion of the production budget. In June 2006, 165438+ 10, Summit officially signed a contract and became the general agent for overseas copyright sales of Chibi. Peak Company began to pre-sell in the European film market at the Berlin Film Festival held in February 2007, and soon sold the copyrights in most parts of Europe. At this time, there are still two months before the official shooting of the film. Subsequently, producer Zhang sold the distribution rights of Hong Kong to Meiya. In addition, Standard Chartered Bank of Hong Kong provides differential financing, and CineFinance, a famous American film financing insurance company, provides completion guarantee.

On April 14, 2007, Chibi was officially launched. The actual shooting time lasted eight and a half months. Due to its large scale and rich content, the film will be divided into two episodes in Asia and released in different schedules. In other parts of the world, it will be compiled into an episode. During the filming, about 2000 warships with various ancient props gathered in a reservoir surrounded by mountains in Hebei Province to shoot big scenes. Wu Yusen will combine three-dimensional computer technology to turn this reservoir into the Yangtze River and the surrounding mountains into Chibi. Five famous computer stunt companies in the United States will be responsible for the computer animation part of the film. Director John Woo explicitly requested that the final effect should conform to The Trojan Horse Slaughter. The total investment of this film increased to 70 million dollars, making it one of the most expensive films in China.

Filming

After nearly three years' preparation and one year's preparation, on April 14, 2007, China's ancient war epic Red Cliff, which attracted worldwide attention, was finally officially launched at the CCTV Film and Television Base in Zhuozhou, Hebei. Zhuozhou is only an hour's drive from Beijing.

Ye Jintian, the artistic director, transformed an existing hall of the film and television base into two different internal spaces. One is the palace of Liu Xie, Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, where the Prime Minister Cao Cao supported the emperor and made princes. The other room is the main hall of Sun Quan, where Zhuge Liang speaks and Confucianism-Sun Quan's ministers.

Another interior was built in the studio of Zhuozhou Film and Television Base. That's Zhou Yu's private residence, Zhou Mansion. One of the few literary plays in this war epic film was shot here, including the touching love play of Zhou Yu and Xiao Qiao, and the play of Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang learning the piano together.

Except for these three interior scenes, the rest of the film was shot outdoors, mainly in three wars: Nagano World War I, Sanjiangkou Sino-Japanese War and Battle of Red Cliffs finale.

Battle of nagasaka

The battle of nagasaka was divided into two parts. It happened for the first time in Changban village. Liu Bei's two wives were killed; General Zhao Yun rode alone to save Liu Bei's youngest son Dou. The second time happened in Changbanpo. General Guan Yu and Zhang Fei resisted enemy soldiers while covering the retreat of ordinary people.

In order to play the role of General Zhao Zilong well, Hu Jun specially followed the action to guide Lin Dian to train for several months, and finally made his body shape and physique reach the best state before the film started. However, the strong physical demands finally made Hu Jun's old spinal injury relapse, and he was forced to quit his rehabilitation for a whole month.

When the plot of the Battle of Nagasaka was staged for the second time, the action guide had been changed to Yuan Kui. This is the second time that Yuan Kui has cooperated with John Woo. The first time was 1974 more than 30 years ago. At that time, John Woo directed the first film in his life, ironman Tenderness, and Yuan Kui was the action director of this film. After more than 30 years, the two have cooperated again and are still very tacit. A lot of action details were designed by John Woo on paper first, and Yuan Kui always showed them accurately and beautifully. Although the shooting process was extremely difficult, the tacit cooperation between the two made everything go smoothly.

Sanjiangkou campaign

In mid-June, 2007, Tony Leung Chiu Wai reported to the location of Sanjiangkou Campaign. For Tony Leung Chiu Wai, the severe test comes not only from hot weather, but also from galloping in heavy armor. The location there is a clearing, which used to be a shooting range of the People's Liberation Army. Therefore, except for a few tents temporarily built by the crew, it is impossible to avoid the scorching sun.

At that time, the scene of shooting the Battle of Sanjiangkou was also spectacular. More than 0/000 infantry from both sides/KLOC-plus more than 300 cavalry and war horses, plus more than 700 crew members, the difficulty of scheduling and shooting a large scene of more than 2,000 people can be imagined.

The last shot of Tony Leung Chiu Wai in the Battle of Sanjiangkou was also taken here, and it was heavy armor, but the time has turned into a cold winter, and the ground is full of snow. The filming of this scene lasted for half a year. However, when watching this film, the audience did not know.

At the beginning of this scene, Sun Shangxiang, played by Zhao Wei, led a group of female soldiers and deliberately rushed into Cao Cao's ambush. They fought hard and shot arrows at the enemy when they retreated. Cao Jun didn't know there was fraud, so he chased after him desperately in the dense fog. Unconsciously, I fell into a trap set by Sun Liu's allied forces. The allies will go to war one after another. Finally, even Zhou Yu disguised himself and risked his life to save Zhao Yunzhong's arrow.

Battle of red cliff

The reason why Battle of Red Cliffs went down in history is that the two armies of Sun and Liu, combined, were at an absolute disadvantage, and as a result, the few prevailed over the many, and the weak prevailed over the strong. Although the battle was named Battle of Red Cliffs, it actually took place in Wulin, which is separated from Chibi by a river.

Battle of Red Cliffs is divided into two parts, one on the river and the other on the land. According to the fire attack strategy deployed by Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang in advance, Wu Dong General Huang Gai led a fireboat into Cao Cao's water army camp. Because Cao Cao's warships were connected together, when the wind turned, it suddenly became a sea of fire. Soon, two thousand ships were lit.

John Woo has been preparing for this scene for more than a year. The eighteen giant warships needed are too big to be transported to the reservoir from other places, so they can only be built on the spot. One of the biggest ships is 38 meters long from beginning to end! The construction of all warships began in June 2006 and was not completed until May of the following year, which lasted more than eight months. At the same time, four large docks were built next to the reservoir. In addition, after the construction of the nearby shipyard was completed, many warships were transported away. The remaining two thousand ships can only be made by three-dimensional animation.

In order to shoot Water War, John Woo specially invited the famous Hong Kong director Patrick Leung as the executive director. The shooting process is divided into four steps: the first step is real shooting, mostly the scene of burning warships and soldiers falling into the water. The second step is to build a giant pool in a big studio in the suburbs of Beijing, disassemble some warships on location and transport them here for reassembly. Patrick Leung is responsible for filming the collision and sinking of warships, while the gunfire around is still fierce and the war continues. The third step is to shoot with the model and supplement the real shot. Step four, hand it over to Orfinch for computer stunts.

The ocean part of Battle of Red Cliffs pushed the film to a climax. At first, Wu Dong's general Gan Xing, played by Japanese movie star Shi Duo Nakamura, rushed ashore, and finally blew up the gate of Cao Ying fortress, where he died heroically. Then Zhou Yu, played by Tony Leung Chiu Wai, rushed in with the troops. He was anxious to rescue his wife, Xiao Qiao, who was held hostage by Cao Cao.

At this point, the leaders of the two armies, Zhou Yu and Cao Cao, finally met across the sea of fire. This is the first and only time in the film. According to the person in charge of Jianfeng Film Company, which is responsible for the overseas distribution of the film, "Red Cliff" will be cut into two episodes of two hours each, while the version outside Asia will be a two-and-a-half-hour single episode.

The idea of dividing Red Cliff into two episodes came from Han Sanping, general manager of China Film Group. "The story of the Three Kingdoms is so familiar to Asian audiences, especially those in China, Japan and South Korea. They can almost casually say every important person and every important battle. It is impossible to condense these into two hours, so we decided to release two versions. "

The war drama "Wu Yusen" revealed that all the films are progressing smoothly. The Cao Jun camp built in Hebei is nearing completion, and the reservoir used to shoot the water war and its surrounding mountains have also been photographed by the later computer special effects department into a three-dimensional model map and brought back to the United States. Because the mountains in the north are completely different from those in the south of the Yangtze River, they have to be synthesized by computer. Wu Yusen said frankly, "The most difficult thing in the whole film is the war scene. Although I had experience in controlling the big scenes of war when shooting Whisperwind, it was more difficult to shoot water wars than before. "

throw

The story of the Three Kingdoms is a household name in Asia. People have either read the classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms, read the comics of the Three Kingdoms, played the games of the Three Kingdoms, or watched movies and TV series adapted from the stories of the Three Kingdoms. Therefore, everyone has formed their own views and opinions on the characters of the Three Kingdoms. This makes it extremely challenging to choose the right actor to star in this film.

But director John Woo wanted the film to be loyal to history, so he decided to choose actors according to the descriptions of the characters in the Three Kingdoms in the history books. For example, Battle of Red Cliffs took place in 208 AD. At that time, Zhuge Liang was only 27 years old, eight feet tall and handsome as a pine and cypress, and had just been recruited as a strategist by the master Liu Bei. This man is humorous and full of personal charm. For Takeshi Kaneshiro, this role seems to be born for him. And Takeshi Kaneshiro himself happened to like this SJMS character in Romance of the Three Kingdoms from an early age.

Zhou Yu, the military leader of Wu Dong, is a typical romantic hero. There is such a record in the history books. Su Dongpo, a great poet in the Song Dynasty, wrote Niannujiao Chibi Nostalgia, which is still widely circulated today. On the one hand, he wants to gallop the battlefield for his country, on the other hand, he has to worry about the life safety of his beloved wife Xiao Qiao. Tony Leung Chiu Wai had never played a brave and charming ancient Confucian general before. The Wei Zi version of Zhou Yu will definitely bring many surprises to Asian audiences who are familiar with the Three Kingdoms.

The film Red Cliff is the third collaboration between Tony Leung Chiu Wai and John Woo. In the early 1990s, Tony Leung Chiu Wai starred in The Street Bloody and Cold Detective directed by John Woo.

There are few descriptions of Zhou Yu's wife Xiao Qiao in history books and novels, except that she is a stunning beauty. Playing Xiao Qiao in Red Cliff is the first time that Lin Chi-ling, the top Asian supermodel, gets an electric shock. In order to prepare for this role, Lin Chi-ling gave up all his work six months before the official broadcast and went to Beijing to learn acting from three famous teachers. Her efforts finally paid off, and a super movie star was born.

The most difficult role in the movie Red Cliff is Cao Cao. In the novels and dramas of past dynasties, Cao Cao was a traitor with facial makeup, but it was not. He is really ambitious, and may even want to be emperor himself. But his goal was to end China's separatist regime and years of civil war at that time and unify the whole country. He is also a scholar, who has profound attainments in literature and painting. ZhangFeng yi had previously played the role of a good man in films such as Farewell My Concubine and Jing Ke Stabbed the King of Qin. In Red Cliff, he created a generation of macho men with multiple personalities, and his superb acting skills were well received.
