Later, he was promoted to Lieutenant of Zhechong, and also took charge of the prefect of Dongjun, which Cao Cao once served.

In the 21st year of Jian'an, after Cao Cao returned from his southern expedition to Sun Quan, he sent Governor Xiahou Dun to station 26 troops and horses in the camp. Cao Cao ordered: "Wei Jiang can still enjoy the pleasure of gold and stone because of his military service, let alone a general with outstanding military exploits!" In the 24th year of Jian'an, Cao Cao marched into Mobei to attack Guan Yu, and usually asked Xiahou Dun to travel with him in the same car. , he could enter and exit Cao Cao's bedroom freely, and no other generals could enjoy this treatment. Finally, Xia Houdun paid homage to the former general and led the troops to return to Shouchun, and later transferred to Zhaoling. After Emperor Wen of Wei Cao Pi ascended the throne, he worshiped Xiahou Dun as his general. Xiahou Dun died a few months later.

Although Xiahou Dun was in the military, he personally invited teachers to receive education. He was a frugal man by nature and was not fond of money. He often gave away his extra money to others and never managed any property in his life. After Xiahou Dun died, he was given the posthumous title Zhonghou, and his son Xiahou Chong inherited the title. Cao Pi recalled Xiahou Dun's meritorious service, and wanted his descendants to be marquises forever. He would give Xiahou Dun's family food to thousands of households, and reward Xiahou Dun's seven sons and two grandsons to become marquises of Guannei.
