How do meteorologists know where to put the "L" and "H" in the weather?

Generally speaking, in domestic meteorology, weather maps are marked with "L" and "N" or "G" and "D", indicating cold and warm and high respectively. There is no H symbol in the domestic weather map. If there is, it may be' low' and' high', and there are also high and low points.
