History of the Department of Atmospheric and Marine Sciences of Peking University Institute of Physics

1946 Tsinghua University meteorological department was established. 1952 national colleges and universities were adjusted, and the teachers and students of Tsinghua University Meteorological Department were merged into Peking University Physics Department to set up meteorological specialty.

1958, the department of geophysics was established in Peking University, and the meteorological specialty expanded to atmospheric physics and weather dynamics.

From 65438 to 0998, atmospheric physics and weather dynamics were merged into atmospheric science.

On 200 1, Peking University established the Institute of Physics, and atmospheric science entered the Institute of Physics, establishing the Department of Atmospheric Science.

In 2009, Peking University Institute of Physics held a seminar on the strategic planning for the development of atmospheric science department, and decided to establish a physical ocean specialty while building a good atmospheric discipline in Peking University. On this basis, the current atmospheric science department was renamed as the Department of Atmospheric and Marine Science. Establish the "air-sea interaction and atmospheric water circulation laboratory", strive to become the key laboratory of the Ministry of Education as soon as possible, and lay the foundation for restoring the national key laboratory in the future; Further strengthen cooperation with China Meteorological Bureau, State Oceanic Administration, Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Institute of Oceanography and Institute of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and combine Peking University's advantages in basic research and student training with the advantages of larger scientific research teams and platforms of the above-mentioned units to complement each other and form its own characteristics.

20 10 Peking University established physical oceanography specialty in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences.

For decades, Peking University Institute of Atmospheric Sciences has trained a large number of outstanding talents for the development of meteorological cause and scientific research in China. There are many famous teachers here. Zhu Kezhen, Zhao Jiuzhang, Tu, Xie, Gu Zhenchao, Tao Shiyan, Zhou Xiuji, Zhao Bailin and other famous scientists have all taught or worked part-time here.

There are a lot of talents here, and a large number of talents have emerged among more than 2,000 graduates. Ye Duzheng, Xie, Ren Zhenhai, Zeng Qingcun, Zhao Bailin, Qiu, Li Zechun, Huang, Lu Daren and Ding all studied here.

Among the leaders of the National Meteorological Administration, the State Oceanic Administration, provincial and municipal meteorological bureaus, scientific research institutes and institutions of higher learning, quite a few people graduated from Peking University majoring in atmospheric science. They have made outstanding contributions to meteorological education, meteorological services, marine undertakings and scientific research in China.
