Who is the inventor of the sea clock?
Before the 16th and 17th centuries, navigators did not have an accurate instrument that could determine longitude. In 1707, a British fleet ran aground and sank in the fog due to miscalculation of longitude, resulting in the tragedy of 2,000 lives lost. The tragedy shocked the country. After this incident, the British Parliament offered a reward of 20,000 pounds, announcing that whoever could invent an instrument capable of measuring longitude with an average time error of less than 3 seconds per day would receive the reward. In 1735, John Harrison, the son of a carpenter, built his Astronomical Clock No. 1. This new instrument is also called a chronometer. It used clockwork as power and was successfully tested at sea. The British authorities awarded him 500 pounds and encouraged him to continue research and improvement. In 1761, Harrison's Astronomical Clock No. 4 came out and was installed on the British Royal Warship "Depford". The ship was tested during the voyage to Jamaica, and when it arrived in Jamaica six weeks later, it was only five seconds slower. A few months later, the ship returned to the UK with a total error of only 1 minute, 54 and a half seconds, far exceeding the prescribed standard. In 1772, Captain James Kirk sailed to the South Pole using a replica of Astronomical Clock No. 4. This astronomical clock also functioned perfectly in sub-zero cold weather. A year later, Harrison got his due. Since then, the astronomical clock invented by Harry Lin has been commonly used on ocean ships. Harrison's invention provided effective and reliable instruments for countless navigators in later generations.
