Sand mountain weather

Located six kilometers south of Dunhuang County, Gansu Province, there is a Mingsha Mountain. According to legend, in the Northern Song Dynasty, it was called Shensha Mountain and Shajiao Mountain. This mountain is recorded in detail in the encyclopedias of the Song Dynasty, such as Dazhengzang and Taiping Magnolia. According to historical records, Mingsha Mountain only emits a string sound like bamboo when it is sunny, hence the name "Shaling Qingming".

Mingsha Mountain is about 40 kilometers long from east to west, 20 kilometers long from north to south and tens of meters wide, with steep terrain. Standing at the top of Mingsha Mountain and looking down, I saw sand dunes like forests, magnificent.

According to legend, this Mingsha Mountain is an ancient battlefield, and such a story has happened here. In ancient times, a general led the army to spend the night here. Unexpectedly, when the dust came, yellow sand was everywhere. It was wiped out overnight. From then on, every time businessmen from the western regions pass through Mingsha Mountain, they will hear horns and drums, just like the army is fighting.

But legends are legends after all, and there is no specific scientific and historical basis. So why does Mingsha Mountain sound like nature? Now we can explain this strange phenomenon from a scientific point of view.

This is actually a unique natural phenomenon in the desert, and singing sand is also called ringing sand. Records about Xiangsha first appeared in China ancient books in the eighth century. Since then, Kyle Poirot, Darwin and many other explorers have also described this phenomenon. Some researchers believe that the reason why sand makes sound is because the dry climate leads to the collapse of sand dunes and the emergence of gravel vibration. The basic condition of sand whistling is that the sound volume is the same or close to trigger whistling. Judging from the structure of gravel, its surface is loose and granular, even and irregular. From the individual point of view of sand, the main feature of wanting to become Mingsha is that its material should be mainly quartz sand. The seasonal content of sand in Mingsha Mountain is quite high, and with the long-term climate change, special pores are gradually formed.

Singing sand is mainly based on the above three reasons. According to local people, they don't often hear the sound of sand in their daily life.

If dozens of people walk together on Mingsha Mountain or slide down from the sand dunes, there will be a slight melody.

Some people even think that under the long-term wind erosion, those grains of sand become uniform in size and very close to each other, reaching the state of honeycomb holes. Such a sand grain structure makes the sand produce * * * vibration effect in the process of friction. Therefore, when people are skiing, there will be a phenomenon of sand ringing.
