Scope of work of the Hong Kong Observatory
The Hong Kong Meteorological Center of the Hong Kong Observatory operates 24 hours a day to disseminate the latest weather news to the public, including the highest and lowest temperatures, regional temperatures, relative humidity, rainfall, tidal data, ultraviolet index, wind speed, air pressure and other information. In addition, the Observatory will also forecast the weather for the next seven days. Whenever there is bad weather, the Observatory will issue different weather warning signals according to the situation to remind the public to take corresponding measures.
② Aviation meteorology
Major projects: Meteorological services at Hong Kong International Airport
The Hong Kong Observatory is also the first meteorological service unit in the Asia-Pacific region to obtain ISO900 1:2000: 2000 certification. Aviation meteorology is the main source of income for the Hong Kong Observatory. The Observatory also installed the world's first lidar system for airport weather warning at the Hong Kong International Airport. The Hong Kong Observatory has been monitoring radiation since 196 1, and extended the radiation monitoring work to a comprehensive environmental radiation monitoring plan in 1987. So far, the radiation monitoring network set up by the Observatory has ten fixed monitoring stations. In addition, the Observatory will regularly conduct land surveys in remote areas by using trucks equipped with radiation meters. As for aerial surveys, the Observatory will also use helicopters to conduct surveys in Hong Kong and its adjacent waters. Then, the samples and data obtained from the patrol survey are analyzed, and the monitoring results are published regularly.

Time standard and geophysical service
① Time standard
Hong Kong Time (HKT) managed by the Hong Kong Observatory is the time standard adopted in Hong Kong. Hongkong time is 8 hours faster than Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) all year round, which is consistent with countries and regions located in UTC+8 time zone, including Chinese mainland and Taiwan Province Province. The accuracy of Hong Kong time is within 1 microsecond per day. At present, the Hong Kong Observatory provides time service through a time server, an automatic information inquiry system and a time signal broadcast by Hong Kong Public Radio.
② Earthquake
Hong Kong is far away from the earthquake zone, so there is little possibility of a major earthquake. On average, the Hong Kong Observatory records about two felt earthquakes every year. The observatory will also monitor the tsunami caused by the undersea earthquake. Once a tsunami that may affect Hong Kong is predicted, tsunami warnings and reports will be issued to the public when necessary.
