Where is the Dead Sea?

Located between Palestine, Jordan and Israel in West Asia, in the middle of the North-South Rift Valley.

Although the well-known "Dead Sea" is called "Sea", it is actually just a famous inland saltwater lake. It is 75km long from north to south and 5- 16km wide from east to west, and the lake area is 1045km2. The height of the lake is 392m lower than that of the Mediterranean Sea, with an average depth of 146m and the deepest point of 395m, making it the lowest place on land in the world.

The West Bank of the Dead Sea is the Judea Mountains, and the East Bank is the Outer Jordan Plateau. The Jordan River flows from north to south into the Dead Sea. On the east bank of the Dead Sea, the El Richa Peninsula (meaning tongue) extends into the lake and divides it into two parts. The north is large and deep, with an area of 780 square kilometers and an average depth of 375 meters; The south is small and shallow, with an area of 260 km2 and an average depth of 6m.

The climate in the Dead Sea area is extremely hot (the annual average temperature is 25℃), and the evaporation of water is extremely high (the average evaporation of water in summer is 65,438 0 inches per hour), which always causes a soft layer of water mist to diffuse and float on the surface of the Dead Sea, while the water in the Dead Sea is green, the water surface is as calm as a mirror, silent and without a ripple, and the rocks on both sides are clearly reflected in the water, giving the water surface a touch of tender red.

The salt content of the water in the Dead Sea is as high as 25%-30%. Except for a few microorganisms, no animals and plants can survive. When the flood came, fish and shrimp in the Jordan River and other streams were washed into the Dead Sea. Because of the high salt content and the serious lack of oxygen in the water, these fish and shrimp will all die. However, people will not drown if they fall into the dead sea.

According to legend, in 70 AD, Imperial Capital, commander of the Roman army's crusade, executed several captured slaves and ordered them to drown in the Dead Sea. However, these people who were thrown into the lake did not sink, and repeated this several times, thinking that they were blessed by the gods, so they were pardoned.

The mineral composition of dead sea water is as high as 33%, especially the contents of bromine, magnesium, potassium and iodine are extremely high. It has played a role in medical care since ancient times. It is said that from 5 1 year BC to 30 BC, Queen Cleopatra of Egypt used dead seawater to heal her wounds. Aristotle, an ancient Greek philosopher, also talked about the role of the Dead Sea in his works.

The air in the Dead Sea is the driest and purest on the earth, and its oxygen content is 10% higher than that in the general sea surface. In addition, bromine and ultraviolet rays have formed a unique natural landscape and medical efficacy, attracting tourists from all over the world.

Sunny days, blue waves rippling; When it rains, it is foggy and misty, and the mountains and waters are far away. The Dead Sea always makes people feel confused and magical.
