Reminiscent of last year's poem

1. Inscribed on Nanzhuang of the Capital City

Tang Dynasty: Cui Hu

On this day last year, in this gate, the peach blossoms on the human face contrasted with each other.

I don’t know where the human face is, but the peach blossoms still smile in the spring breeze.

Translation: Last spring, in this family’s home, I saw that beautiful face and the peach blossoms set off each other, making it look extremely rosy. When I come here again today, I don’t know where the girl has gone. Only the peach blossoms are still there, smiling in full bloom in the spring breeze.

2. Huanxisha

Song Dynasty: Yan Shu

A new song and a glass of wine, the weather is the same as last year. When does the sun set?

There is no choice but the flowers fall away, and the familiar swallow returns. The fragrant path in the small garden wanders alone.

Translation: Listening to a new song and drinking a glass of wine, or the same weather as last year. When will the setting sun come back? Flowers always wither and leave people helpless, but the familiar spring swallow returns again, wandering alone in the flower-scented path.

3. Ruan Langgui

Song Dynasty: Ouyang Xiu

When I was outing in Nanyuan in the middle of spring, the wind was gentle and I could hear horses neighing. Green plums are like beans and willows are like eyebrows, and butterflies fly as the day goes by.

The dew is heavy, the grass smoke is low, and people’s curtains hang down. I feel sleepy on the swing and undress my clothes, and the two swallows return to the painting hall.

Translation: During a spring outing in the gardens of the southern suburbs, I could hear the neighing of horses in the warm spring breeze. The green plums are as big as peas, and the delicate willow leaves are as beautiful as eyebrows. The spring days are getting longer, and the butterflies fly so lightly.

The dewdrops on the flowers are crystal clear, the spring grass is as thick as smoke, and the curtains have been drawn down in this house. She was extremely tired after playing on the swing, so she took off her clothes and fell asleep on the bed, with only the two swallows on the beam accompanying her.

4. Qingpingle

Song Dynasty: Yan Shu

Spring comes and autumn goes. Where do you know the past?

The swallow returns to fly and the orchid weeps. The scenery is irresistible.

The people in the wine market were scattered and worried. The leisure steps lean against the sycamore trees alone.

I remember last year on this day, the yellow leaves were blowing from the west wind.

Translation: When spring comes and autumn passes, where should we look for the past again? The weather is getting colder, the swallows are flying back south, and the orchid grass is also covered with dew, as if they are crying sadly. Time cannot be retained even if it is lost forever. After drinking, the guests had dispersed. Full of sadness and boredom, I came to the steps and leaned against the sycamore tree alone. Thinking back to today last year, the west wind was also blowing and the yellow leaves were dancing wildly.

5. Jinse

Tang Dynasty: Li Shangyin

The Jinse has fifty strings for no reason, each string and one column is reminiscent of the past.

Zhuang Sheng was obsessed with butterflies in his morning dream, and looked forward to the emperor's spring heart with cuckoos.

The moon in the sea has tears, and the sun in Lantian is warm and the jade produces smoke.

This feeling can be remembered later, but it was already at a loss.

Translation: Why does the exquisite zither have fifty strings? Each string and each section make people miss the past. Zhuang Zhou danced and turned into a butterfly in his sleep. Emperor Wang expressed his hatred to the cuckoo.

The bright moon shines high in the sea, and the tears of the sharks turn into beads; the red sun in Lantian is warm, and you can see the smoke of good jade. The joys and sorrows of separation and reunion cannot be recalled today, but back then they were careless and already at a loss.
