Hanging temple/monastery
Datong, Shanxi
On Mount Hengshan, there is a hanging temple called "the grand view of the world" by Xu Xiake, which is the crown of the 18 scenic spots on Mount Hengshan. Founded in the late Northern Wei Dynasty (about 6th century AD), it has a history of 1400 years, and is the most famous suspended academy in China. Ancient poets vividly praised: "White clouds are sealed on the Feiting Cliff", "A mirage is suspicious of the sea, and the bird path is not in the clouds". There are 40 pavilions in the whole temple, from east to west. Dig a cave on a steep cliff, insert a cantilever beam as the foundation, and have a plank road to connect pavilions. Overlooking the building is like an abyss; Looking up at the bottom of the valley, the cliff is like a rainbow. For thousands of years, this temple has experienced wind and rain. It is a miracle in the history of architecture that it is still safe after several major earthquakes. The temple building consists of three parts: the temple, the south first floor and the north building. The north and south floors are opposite from top to bottom, which is both a pavilion and a gatehouse. Temples and pavilions are all three-story eaves, resting at the top of the mountain. The building of Diange is built on the mountain, with a small top and a large bottom. The lower part is made of bricks, and the upper part is made of pavilions and stones. The house is built on a cliff. All the construction sites are in the cracks of these rocks. There is a cliff between the north and south floors, which is connected by a flying plank road. On the plank road, there is a double-decker eaves building. Although it is located on the cliff of thousands of feet Jedi, it is still surrounded by three cloisters, which makes the building more spectacular and handsome. It is not only famous for its breathtaking temples and pavilions, but also has two halls, namely, the Three Buddhas Hall, the Sakyamuni Hall, the Tibetan Hall, the Guanyin Hall and the Galapagos Hall, as well as the Taiyi Hall, the Sanguan Hall, the Chunyang Palace and the Guandi Hall of Buddhism and Taoism, and even three statues of Confucius, Sakyamuni and Laozi are molded in one hall. As we all know, in the history of our country, there have been contradictions and struggles between Buddhism and Taoism in the development process, and there has been a large-scale incident of "three martial arts and one case" to "destroy Buddhism", in which "one martial arts" is the third generation of Emperor Wu of the Northern Wei Dynasty who proclaimed himself emperor in Datong. But because both religions are polytheists, there are thousands of buddhas, bodhisattvas, arhats, heavenly kings, wise kings and so on in Buddhism. In Taoism, there are gods, gods, earthly gods, real people, mountains and rivers, thunder and fire, bright moon and stars, omnipresent gods and omnipresent gods, all of which are exclusive gods that cannot be interfered by pagans. Therefore, in the long history, the two religions have lived in harmony, and the communication between Buddhism and Taoism is the mainstream. Therefore, there is a Taoist Jade Emperor Pavilion in the Puhua Temple of Wutai Mountain; There is a Buddhist Guanyin Pavilion in the ancient snake cave in Linfen, a holy place of ancient Taoism. There is a Guanyin statue in Ciyun Cave, Sanqing Pavilion, a Taoist priest in Longmen, Xishan, Kunming. The Dunhuang Grottoes in Gansu Province have the Taiqing Taoist Temple; There are three true statues of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism in Sanzhen Hall in Kannonji, Datong. It can be seen that it is not uncommon for Buddhists and Taoists to meet in a temple, and statues and murals are enshrined in one place. Moreover, Buddhism also introduced emperors and foreigners into the ranks of arhats, such as Biyun Temple in Xiangshan, Beijing, Baoguang Temple in Chengdu, Hualin Temple in Guangzhou, etc., all of which shaped the imperial statue of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty into one of the 500 arhats. Emperor Kangxi was carved into the 295th most respected person among the 500 arhats in Baoguang Temple in Chengdu. There is a Christian Luohan statue in the Luohan Hall of Julian Temple in Kunming. There is a statue of Italian traveler Kyle Poirot in the Luohan Hall of Hualin Temple in Guangzhou. Besides Mount Hengshan Hanging Temple, there are two hanging temples in China. A Cangyan Mountain located in the northeast of Jingxing County, Hebei Province, namely Cangyan Mountain Hanging Temple in Hebei Province; The other one is located at Luohan Cliff of Xishan Mountain, southwest of Kunming City, Yunnan Province15km, namely Yunnan Xishan Hangkong Temple. Headed by Hengshan Hanging Temple.
Travels of Hangkong Temple
(2006-0 1-24 04:25: 17)
For the first wonder of Hengshan Mountain in Beiyue, Hunyuan Hanging Temple, I have only seen it on TV before, and I have no specific impression. Today, I was lucky enough to visit the Hanging Temple, and I couldn't help but marvel at everything there.
Five kilometers south of Hunyuan, to Jinlong Gorge in Hengshan Mountain, from a distance, between the half cliffs of Cuiping Peak on the west side of the canyon, a group of ancient buildings are hung in the air, exquisitely carved. It seems that the fairy pavilion in Qionglou, which fell from the Heavenly Palace, is tightly held in the arms of Hengshan Mountain. This is the famous Hanging Temple.
Hangkong Temple was founded in the 15th year of Taihe in the Northern Wei Dynasty (AD 49 1), with a history of over 500 years. Backed by Cuiping Peak, facing Tianfengling, the main peak of Hengshan Mountain, facing the deep valley about 50 meters below, sitting west to east, taking the trend of worshipping the main temple of Hengshan Mountain. The whole temple consists of three parts: the temple and the south and north floors. It is an important part of Hengshan Temple Group. It is the earliest and largest suspended building in the world and the only unique temple in China that integrates Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.
What's so special about seeing a small temple that tourists and experts at home and abroad are amazed? Under the guidance of the tour guide, I entered the Hangkong Temple scenic spot with questions, trying to find the answer. There are temples and temples all over China, but most of them are built in relatively flat places. It is rare to sit on a steep cliff with ingenuity like the Hanging Temple. The original designers, like writers, probably hated too many secular articles, so they came up with the idea of writing a stunning work. After some thinking, this is a great event. You see, the middle of the cliff of Cuiping Peak, where the Hanging Temple is located, is slightly curved, and the Hanging Temple sits at the bottom of the arc impartially. The protruding part of the cliff above is like a sun hat or an eave, protecting the whole temple, making it tottering in the rainy season of the canyon, with the scorching sun and flooding, making it difficult to move. If you encounter foggy weather, the clouds will linger, appearing and disappearing, as if they were real and unreal, and shaking like breaking into a fairyland on earth, making people fascinated and lingering. No wonder Wang Zhanchu left a poem praising him in the Ming Dynasty: "Those who cut rocks make up the Vatican Palace. A mirage is suspicious of the sea, and the bird path is not in the clouds. "
There is a folk song circulating in Hunyuan: Hanging Temple, half a day high, with three ponytails hanging in the air. This is a portrayal of the shape of the Hanging Temple. From the front, the whole building of the Hanging Temple is supported by a dozen pine pillars with thick legs, giving people a feeling of crumbling, as if the wooden pillars were removed and the Hanging Temple would fall down. Actually, it's not. Except some buildings are built on rocks, most of the weight of the suspended temple is scattered and transmitted to rocks and mountains through flying beams embedded in cliffs. To build a temple on a cliff, the first thing to be solved is the support problem. Our predecessors were very clever. They first cut holes in the cliff, then inserted wooden beams soaked in tung oil, and then built them in detail. According to the expert's research, in order to ensure the stability, before inserting the wooden beam, a wedge is slightly driven into one end of the hole. After the wedge touches the bottom of the hole, with the force, the wedge will slowly spread the wooden beam, and the deeper it is, the tighter it will be, just like today's expansion screw. Under normal circumstances, more than a dozen wooden pillars supported only play a decorative role, and they are not stressed when no one is around, and only play a role when the load on them exceeds a certain limit. Wow, I see. It is no wonder that Kong Xuan Temple, also known as Kong Xuan Temple, is both virtual and real, flexible and changeable, and integrates the military strategy into the building. This alone is impressive.
Although the area of Hangkong Temple is not large, there are more than 40 temples, including Zen Hall, Buddhist Hall, Three Buddhist Halls, Taiyi Hall, Guandi Temple, Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Chunyang Palace, Sanguan Hall, Guanyin Hall, Lei Yin Hall and Three Temples, which are the smallest temples in China. There are more than 80 Buddha statues in the temple, such as copper, iron, wood and clay sculpture. They have different forms of expression, vivid and colorful shapes and high aesthetic value. The most distinctive feature of the whole temple is the Dingsanjiao Hall. The three religions refer to Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. Let the founders of the three religions, Sakyamuni, Laozi and Confucius, coexist in one room, which fully embodies the idea of "three religions in one" and forms a paradise on earth with freedom of belief, peaceful coexistence and common development. If American President George W. Bush can stand in the halls of the three major religions, he will be ashamed of his belligerence.
There is a grotto in Kongkong Temple, with four big characters engraved on its inner wall. What is the explanation? Luban's surname is Gongbo, and his name is Ban. Because he is from Lu, people often call him Lu Ban. According to my understanding, "losing skillfully" is to praise Lu Ban's ingenuity and superb skills, and the carved things are better than natural things. There is another interesting legend. According to legend, Lu Ban and his sister Lu Jiang visited Hengshan Mountain. When they swam to the place where the Hanging Temple was located, they felt that it was surrounded by purple and the scenery was pleasant. They decided to build a Buddhist temple halfway up Cuiping Peak and a bridge over the Hunhe River in Jinlong Gorge. Because of the shortage of manpower, Lu Ban wants to invite other experts to build bridges and temples by himself. When competitive Lu Jiang learned about it, he said he could build it without bothering others. So they made a bet and agreed to finish it one day and one night, and only when the chicken crowed. Brother and sister, you chase after me, and no one shows weakness. Soon, my brother completed the main project of the temple. Who knows that my sister is slightly faster, and just after the children, the bridge will be built. Standing by the bridge, she saw that her brother was still busy, so she played a trick and held her nose and learned to scream three times. When Lu Ban heard the cock crow, he lost his mind, divided by three times and five times, and put away the gods in the temple, turning a temple that should belong to Buddhism into a place where Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism are "one". Although it is only a legend, it makes the already extraordinary hanging temple more magical and wonderful.
When I came out of the Hanging Temple, I was impressed by its scenery of "the combination of temple and mountain" and couldn't think of any words to describe it. Suddenly I saw a big stone at the bottom of the temple with the word "spectacular" written on it, which just matched this wonderful work. Ask the tour guide, only to know that it was left by Li Bai, a poet in the Tang Dynasty, after traveling. Before I came to the Aviation Temple, I heard that the bean jelly there was delicious, but I didn't believe it. After a tour, there happened to be a bean jelly shop at the exit. I asked for a bowl to eat, which was really smooth, tender and refreshing, and full of fragrance, comparable to the scenery there. This is really a wonderful enjoyment.
Hanging Temple is dangerous, hanging, strange and ingenious, which integrates mechanics, aesthetics, architecture, Yin and Yang studies and religion. Designers are well-intentioned, builders strive for perfection, and tourists are amazed. It is worthy of being the "grand view of the world" of Xu Xiake, a traveler in the Ming Dynasty. Look at the scenery, understand the truth, and hope that different people have different opinions. We can get insights and enlightenment from the beautiful scenery and enjoy the wonderful life of live high.
