The left and right sides of the dam are made of solid masonry materials, with a spillway tunnel in the middle and five openings for flood discharge in flood season. The downstream of the dam is designed as an arc to reduce the impact of hydraulic power on the dam and avoid self-destruction. There is a water inlet near the right bank at the upstream of the dam, which is buried below the water surface, so that the water can enter the corresponding downstream power station for hydropower generation.

The total installed capacity of Shangkou Reservoir Power Station is1120 kW (1800+1320), and horizontal hydrogenerator is adopted.
