Establishment of Meteorological Observatory in Hong Kong Weather Information Center

The idea of setting up a meteorological observatory in Hong Kong was first put forward by the Royal Society in 1879. The Royal Society believes that Hong Kong has a good geographical position and is "an ideal place to study meteorology, especially typhoons". In fact, with the gradual increase of population in Hong Kong at that time, the losses caused by typhoons have been widely concerned by the society. The Hong Kong Government also welcomes the suggestion of the Royal Society. After detailed discussion and research, 1882 finally accepted the suggestion of the Royal Society. In the summer of 1883, the first astronomical director (the first director of the Observatory), Dr. Dobeck, arrived, and the Hong Kong Observatory was established in the same year. The early work of the Observatory included meteorological observation, geomagnetic observation, reporting time according to astronomical observation and issuing tropical cyclone warning. These valuable services were highly valued and were awarded the title of Royal Observatory by King George V in 19 12. 1 July 19971day, Hong Kong's sovereignty returned to China, and the department was renamed the Hong Kong Observatory. It has been more than 100 years since the establishment of the Observatory, and the operation mode and service scope of the department have kept pace with the times to meet the expectations and needs of modern society. At the same time, the Observatory has continuously introduced advanced technology to keep pace with its business development.
