The growth process of tomato

The whole growth and development process of tomato can be divided into four stages: germination stage, seedling stage, flowering and fruiting stage and fruiting stage.

1, germination period

The germination period is from seed germination to the appearance of the first true leaf. Seeds with high vigor can germinate for 7-9 days under suitable conditions. Seed germination must have suitable temperature and humidity conditions and good ventilation. After the seeds germinate, the radicle first grows, and then the hypocotyl is elongated to push the cotyledons out of the ground. After the cotyledon unfolds, the growing point breaks and the first true leaf grows.

2. Seedling stage

The seedling stage starts from the appearance of the first true leaf to the big bud. There is only vegetative growth in the early stage of seedling stage, and it is mainly vegetative growth in the later stage, and reproductive growth has already begun. In summer and autumn, it usually takes only 45~50 days to complete the seedling stage, while in winter and spring, it often takes 55~65 days to get through the seedling stage because of the low ambient temperature, weak light and slow plant growth.

3. Flowering and fruiting period

The flowering and fruit-setting period of tomato is from big bud to the first ear. At this stage, plants transition from vegetative growth to coexistence of vegetative growth and reproductive growth. The length of flowering period is closely related to the characteristics of varieties and cultivation environment. Early-maturing varieties have concentrated florescence and shorter experience time than middle-late maturing varieties. The flowering period of the same variety is shorter in high temperature environment than in low temperature environment.

4. Fruiting period

The fruiting period of tomato is from the first ear to the end of fruit ripening and harvesting. Tomato is a continuous flowering and fruiting crop. When the first ear of fruit grows to the size of walnut, the second ear of fruit has begun to set fruit and blossom one after another. The length of fruiting period is determined by varieties, environmental conditions, cultivation methods and other factors. Long-season cultivation, as long as the conditions are suitable, the fruiting period can reach 9 months or even more than 1 year.

Extended data

Tomatoes were first grown in Peru and Mexico in South America. They are wild berries that grow in the forest. Because of its beautiful color, the local people regard it as a poisonous fruit, "the fruit of the fox" and "the wolf peach". Only for viewing, no one dares to eat. It is only regarded as an ornamental plant.

According to records, in the/kloc-6th century, an English duke named Aurora traveled in South America. He liked to watch tomato plants very much, so he brought it back to England as a love gift for his lover Queen Elizabeth to show his love. Since then, the names of love fruit and lover fruit have been widely circulated. But people grow tomatoes in the manor as a gift to their lovers as a symbol of love.
