Shangri-La is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province. It is located in the northwest of Yunnan Province, in the hinterland of Hengduan Mountains on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is the junction of Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet provinces, and borders Daocheng County and Muli County in Sichuan Province in the east. The west and south face Lijiang City and Weixi County across the Jinsha River; The north and Deqin County are separated by a strip of water.
Shangri-La, formerly known as Zhongdian County, is called "Jiantang" in Tibetan. It is said that Batang and Litang are the fiefs of the three sons of the Tibetan king. "Dian" seems to be Yi language, meaning "Bazi" and "Pingdu". Zhongdian is a Naxi language, which is a transliteration of "land", meaning "the residence of the chief" or "the place where yaks are raised". Shangri-La is the Tibetan language of Diqing, which means "the sun and moon in my heart".
Shangri-La is located at the southeast edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the northern end of the southern section of Hengduan Mountains and the hinterland of "Three Parallel Rivers", forming a unique landscape integrating snow-capped mountains, canyons, grasslands, alpine lakes, virgin forests and ethnic customs. It extends 365,438+05km from Dali along the Yunnan-Tibet Highway to the central town of Shangri-La County, the capital of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.
