What is the lowest temperature in Siberia?

Minus 73℃.

In January 2023, Russia's Siberia region encountered rare severe cold weather. The temperature in the coldest place has dropped to minus 73°C, breaking the record for the lowest temperature in the history of the northern hemisphere. From the night of the 11th to the 12th, the temperature in Oymyakon, known as the "cold pole of the world", reached minus 60 degrees Celsius.

Local hydrometeorology and environmental monitoring departments stated that these areas have not seen such low temperatures in about 10 years. In extremely cold weather, an external heating device must be used to thaw the car before starting. Even so, it is still prone to failure.

Climate

Most of Siberia has a subarctic coniferous forest climate in the temperate continental climate, and some areas have a boreal tundra climate. Due to its proximity to the Arctic Ocean, the warm air from the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans is blocked by mountains and plateaus, and the climate is cold due to the direct influence of the Arctic Ocean and the Thousand Islands Cold Current.

Siberia is one of the coldest places in the northern hemisphere in winter, with extreme minimum temperatures below minus 70°C. The two "cold poles" of the northern hemisphere (Verkhovyansk and Oymyakon) are located here. The spatial and temporal differences in precipitation are obvious. The annual precipitation is 100-250 mm along the Arctic Ocean, 500-600 mm in the coniferous forest zone, and 1000-2000 mm in the Altai Mountains. 75% to 80% of precipitation is mainly concentrated in summer.
