Weather forecast in Jingtai county, Baiyin

If organizers can be so cautious and prepare for the worst, perhaps casualties can be reduced or even avoided completely.

On May 22nd, Gansu Mountain Marathon suffered from extreme weather, and the body temperature of many runners dropped. At present, 2 1 person has been killed. When the accident happened, Zhu Keming, a herdsman in Changsheng Village, Jingtai County, Gansu Province, was sheltering from the rain in the cave. After hearing the cry for help, he saved six players and ran to the signal place to call for help. Finally, rescuers arrived and six contestants were taken to a safe place.

2 1 person died and 8 people were injured. This mountain marathon in Gansu is undoubtedly a tragedy. But in this tragedy, the shepherd Zhu Keming staged a warm heart scene. He single-handedly rescued six players, among whom 1 twitched and 1 lost temperature and fell to the ground. It is not difficult to imagine that if Zhu Keming hadn't found them in time and brought them into the cave to keep warm, their lives would probably be in danger, and the casualties caused by this accident would probably be even greater.

Looking back on the disaster afterwards, we should not only feel Zhu Keming's feat of saving people, but also reflect on why so many professional cross-country runners can't resist extreme weather, while an ordinary shepherd can cope with it calmly and save six people.

An important reason is that the shepherd knows the local climate like the back of his hand and has made full preparations. On the day of the incident, Zhu Keming was herding sheep. After encountering extreme weather, he came to a cave to take shelter from the rain. It was this cave that helped him and saved six players. This cave was not discovered by Zhu Keming temporarily, but was built by the production team before. Zhu Keming has been here before and stored clothes, bedding and dry food in the cave. Obviously, he had anticipated the extreme weather, so he made full preparations.

In contrast, the players may not be fully prepared. According to reports, among the 172 contestants, quite a few did not prepare warm clothes like jackets, or put their jackets at the supply station near the finish line. You know, a jacket is a must-have for extreme weather. It is precisely because there is no coat that many players lose their temperature. The reason why so many players didn't prepare their coats was that they saw the weather forecast and thought that the temperature was 9-24 that day and there would be no extreme weather. However, the local weather is changeable, and it is difficult for meteorological stations to accurately forecast it. Excessive trust in the weather forecast has led to insufficient preparation for some players.

But most of the players are not locals, and they don't know enough about the local climate and environment. Moreover, in order to achieve good results, they are often more willing to "go into battle lightly", and the lack of preparation is understandable. But why didn't the organizers make enough preparations in advance?

It stands to reason that the organizers should know that the environment in this area is harsh and should expect extreme weather. Moreover, the mountain marathon is an extreme sport. To organize such a competition, the equipment should be guaranteed according to the lowest natural conditions and the worst environmental climate. However, among the events required by the organizing committee of this competition, only the life-saving blanket is a kind of equipment to resist extreme weather. Others, such as windbreakers and jackets, are only recommended, not mandatory. It is such negligence that many players have lost the opportunity to save themselves.

Extreme weather is unexpected, but that doesn't mean you can't be prepared. The shepherd put clothes, bedding and dry food in the cave, so he came prepared, so he could cope with extreme weather calmly and save six people. This may be experience, but it is not prudent. If organizers can be so cautious and prepare for the worst, perhaps casualties can be reduced or even avoided completely. But the tragedy has happened, and while we praise the shepherd's righteous act, we must also reflect deeply.
