This article is selected from the annotation part of Walking on the Edge of Life. Although it is an annotation, it is actually more than a dozen essays, with anecdotes, opinions and touching stories. Although this article is not in the main part, I think it is the most touching part of the whole book and I really want to share it with you.

Hint: The story in this article happened in 2003, when Mr. Jiang Yang was 94 years old. Her only daughter, Qian Ai, died of spinal cord cancer in 1997, and her husband, Qian Zhongshu, died in the following year 1998.

Reminder: I hope you can calm down and read this article.

The building where I live is Building 6, and there is a sick cypress tree in front of the bedroom window, because a big willow tree next to it occupies the sunshine in the sky and the soil on the ground. Fortunately, the willow died in time, but it was weak and lost the height of the cypress. Unlike the lush cypress, it could not enter the magpie. The sparse branches and leaves of sick cypress make magpies find a good place to nest. In 2003, a pair of magpies built a nest on the branches of a sick cypress tree. I'm glad to welcome you. I took time to pick up many branches in the yard and put them on the balcony for them to use. I don't know that the building materials chosen by magpies for nesting are quite particular. I am an amateur, and I haven't picked any branches. After several days, I knew I didn't adopt it, so I had to move a lot of branches downstairs and throw them away.

The magpie nest has just been built like a pot. It was stormy all night, and the trunk of the sick cypress was swept by the wind, sweeping the magpie nest to the ground. Fortunately, no eggs have been laid yet. Soon after, this pair of magpies made another one on the top of the walnut tree on the roadside downstairs in Duishan No.7. I can see it clearly from the window on the third floor. I went downstairs and looked up under the tree, but I couldn't find it, because the branches and leaves of the walnut tree were sparse and the magpie nests were hidden. But this nest is very simple because it was built in a hurry. Walnut trees are not evergreen trees. When the leaves fall in winter, the magpie nest hangs naked on the bare tree and can be seen from a distance.

In early spring and February of 2004, the leaves of peach trees had not germinated. On February 20 this year, I saw this pair of magpies nesting on the high branches of the sick cypress. This time, with experience, I set up the first branch, left and right, and it took a long time to set up the first branch, then flew to the walnut tree and tore down the old nest. It turns out that magpies are also dismantled! They have already gone to work. Unexpectedly, ten days later, on March 3, the old nest had been demolished without a trace. Every morning, two magpies nest outside my window. It's stormy again, and the magpie's nest won't fail. The two of them worked hard every day. Two weeks later, the magpie's nest was built bigger than the birdcage, and the top layer of the nest was firmly tied to the branch higher than the cypress. I am satisfied to see the magpie kicking hard with a branch, and the branch can't be pushed down.

There are two holes in the magpie's nest, one in the east and the other in the west. Magpie has a long tail. One door goes in and the other door comes out. You don't have to turn around when you enter the nest. On the side facing my window, the interwoven branches are sparse, probably because my house is blocked, so I don't have to get too close, maybe for ventilation. Because magpies live together in this new nest. Aunt said that eggs will be laid soon. They also keep mending their nests every day, holding soft grass feathers and the like. I contributed some soft grass to the broom, all of which were paved with titles.

On April 3, the magpie nest was completed. Later, I saw the smaller female magpie often lying in the nest. According to my aunt, it takes three months for chickens to hatch eggs, and magpies are smaller than chickens, so it may not take three months. Father magpie goes into the nest every day to let mother magpie come out to relax. He usually observes outside the nest and must feed the mother magpie. The two of them are guarding their nest all day. There must be eggs in the nest. It's April 19. On rainy days, the female magpie's feathers are wet and look very thin. I found four or five magpies hiding from the rain under the eaves of the fifth building in the back. The buildings from 1 to 5/are not the same as those above 6, and there is a place for magpies to take shelter from the rain, but it is very narrow. Magpies have long tails and can only lean sideways. It's probably the neighbor's father magpie who takes shelter from the rain, and the magpie's mother is probably in the nest. Father Magpie in my window nest often goes out with Mother Magpie. It must be loading eggs.

On May 12, I saw five or six magpies (including my father's magpies in my nest outside the window) circling around the cypress tree, stopping beside the magpie nest together and chirping. I thought it was a fight, but it didn't look like it. After chirping for a while, I bypassed the cypress tree and landed on it together. I don't know what happened.

13 Aunt called me "Come and see!" In my bedroom window. I hurried to see that the magpie nest seemed haunted. On one side of my window, the magpie nest is sparsely woven. In the gap, you can see several bright lights and red dots inside. A closer look shows that the little magpie in the nest has hatched and its little head is shaking. Shiny eyes. The mouth is wide open, the mouth is yellow, and the red dot should be the tongue. I didn't see three or four of them. They were all hungry.

I'm happy for magpie, too. It's hard enough to hold an egg, and all the chickens in the egg are out! Yesterday, the magpies flew around the tree, landed on the edge of the nest and twittered around the tree, twittering together. This is to celebrate the birth of baby magpie. He Ke is the father of the big magpie, and the mother of the magpie can't come together. Presumably, they are still holding eggs and can't get away.

Aunt said that it will take at least seven to ten days for a young magpie to learn to fly after its plumage is full. I'm not in a hurry to watch the little magpies learn to fly. I just want to watch the little magpies gather at the nest mouth, with their yellow mouths open, waiting to be fed. Since the birth of the little magpie, the magpie's father and mother have never entered the nest again, for fear of crushing the little magpie.

Aunt suddenly remembered that she had just sprayed insecticide on elm trees not long ago. I think the whole city is spraying drugs. Where do parents magpies go for food? 14, I heard my parents' magpies talking. Mother magpie called many times before they both flew away. But only two shook their heads. The weather turns cold, and it is predicted that it will rain at night. Xiao Queer lived for three dynasties. She didn't eat anything, she was cold and hungry. Is she still alive?

It rained before dinner and stayed up all night. Although there is a roof on the magpie nest, it leaks rain. I can't open an umbrella for the magpie nest, because I can't reach it, and I can't find some cotton wool to shelter the chicks from the wind and rain. A bird out of its shell can't get it back, so it's no use worrying. One night's rain is not a small amount of moderate rain. When I got up in the morning, there was no sound in the magpie's nest, and several little lives were all over. After dinner that day, I saw my parents magpie come back. Father Magpie only looked into the nest and flew away. Mother Magpie stuck to the branch, jumped near the Bird's Nest again, looked at the Bird's Nest again, and flew away with Father Magpie.

On May 16, at 8: 30 in the morning, I heard two magpies talking. Looking from the window, I saw the female magpie standing on the branch of the cypress tree, jumping on a branch, and jumping to a place close to the nest mouth, looking down at the nest, crying like a cry, chirping seven times and chirping four times. And flew away. I haven't seen Papa Magpie, but I think we are together. On the wet leaves of the walnut tree next to the cypress tree, there is still the rain last night, as if it were tears for them. After dinner that day, my parents' magpies flew in again, but they didn't climb the tree. They just stood opposite Building 7 and watched.

Two days later, on the morning of May 18, four or five big magpies, who had come to celebrate the birthday of the little magpie six days ago, flew around the branches of cypress trees and chirped for a while. There are two oldest people chirping in the magpie's nest, as if they were addressing the mourning children, and then they both flew away. My parents don't know if they are entertaining us on the roof, and I haven't seen them either. At four o'clock in the afternoon, mother magpie barked back and forth in front of the nest, and father magpie was around, which made me sad. The next day, May 19, is my daughter's birthday. At three o'clock in the afternoon, I went to Baizhi again and mourned for three or four minutes. The next day, it was also after three o'clock in the afternoon, the same time. The female magpie gave another cry to the nest, jumped on another branch, bowed her head to the nest, looked up and flew away with her father.

On May 27th, at 6 o'clock in the morning, I saw the mother magpie standing quietly on the walnut tree beside the cypress tree, and the magpie father was watching. Yes, I flew away. On May 28th, Xiao Que has been dead for half a month. Xiao Zhen was born on May 12th and died on 13th and 4th. Magpie parents have come to visit their lair again. Mother Magpie stood on the top of the nest and cried sadly. Then my parents fly together. From then on, they never stood on this cypress tree again, just watching nearby. After dinner, I often see them standing on the opposite roof to watch. Once, an old crow came and sat on the nest. Parents called friends, the yard was in chaos, and the old crow was driven away and settled down. Our area is the territory of magpies, and neither grey magpies nor old crows are allowed to invade it. I wonder if the chicken's body stinks after being exposed to rain and sun? Did the old crow smell it and have a bad heart?

This empty nest-it's not empty. There is a dead magpie hanging in front of my window. I see my parents and magpies watching from the top of Building 7 every day, and I am sad with them. The heavy snow in winter, the whole sick cypress, including the magpie nest, was trapped in the snow, and the magpie father and mother also braved the cold to visit.

It's another year in a flash. On February 27, 2005, about a year after the magpie nest was built, the magpie father and mother suddenly flew up the cypress tree and looked in near the magpie nest. After rain, snow, sun and wind, the little magpie's body has probably turned to dust and disappeared completely. Parents magpie boarded the nest and twisted it with their mouths. They want to tear it down again, right? They twisted the tangled old branches of pine branches, grabbed one end and kicked their feet hard. Last year, I spent a lot of time tying my nest firmly to the top of the tree. It is not easy to remove it. Every time you dismantle one, you should hold one end and pedal hard. The main force is the magpie father, and the magpie mother sometimes looks on and sometimes cries. Gradually, the hardest part came loose. This solid nest is slowly being demolished, but I am impatient and nosy. Until May 5, the old nest was demolished. One night, the old nest was washed away without a trace. On May 6th, the magpie nest in front of the window has disappeared without a trace. The past joys, sorrows, hopes and sorrows, like a dream, are all gone.
