Translation of the ancient poem "Mountain Dwelling in Autumn"

Dwelling in the Mountains in the Dark Autumn

Wang Wei [Tang Dynasty]

After the new rain in the empty mountains, autumn comes late.

The bright moon shines among the pines, and the clear spring rocks flow upward.

The bamboo noise returns to Huan Nu, and the lotus moves off the fishing boat.

Let the spring fragrance rest at will, and the kings and grandsons can stay.

Translation

The valley is empty and fresh after the new rain, and the weather is particularly cool in the early autumn evening.

The bright moon shines in the quiet pine forest, and clear spring water flows on the rocks.

The girl in the bamboo forest laughed loudly and came back from washing. The lotus leaves swayed gently as she wandered up and down the boat.

Although the beauty of spring fades away, the autumn scenery in front of us is enough to make people linger.

The first couplet is about the autumn scene in the mountains after the rain. Since there are few people here, it is natural that no one is coming in the mountains. The two words "empty mountain" point out that this place is like a paradise. The rain has just begun, and everything is new. It is the evening of early autumn. You can imagine the fresh air and the wonderful scenery.

The sky is already dark, but there is a bright moon in the sky; the flowers have faded, but there are green pines like a canopy. The mountain spring is clear and clear, gurgling on the rocks, like a white and flawless line, shining in the moonlight, what a quiet, clear and natural beauty.

In the neck couplet, the poet first wrote "bamboo noise" and then "lotus movement" because Huan Nu was hidden in the bamboo forest and the fishing boat was covered by lotus leaves. She was not seen at first. When she heard the noise in the bamboo forest, she saw When the lotus leaves were covered with flowers, I discovered Huan Nu and Lotus Boat. Writing this way is more true and poetic. I wrote that bursts of singing and laughter came from the bamboo forest. They were innocent girls returning from washing their clothes and laughing; the slim lotus leaves spread to both sides one after another, turning over countless pearl-like crystal waters. Pearl, it is the fishing boat going down the river that cuts through the tranquility of the moonlight in the lotus pond. Under the green pines and the bright moon, among the green bamboos and green lotuses, there lived a group of carefree, hard-working and kind-hearted people. This harmonious and beautiful picture of life reflects the poet's yearning for a leisurely and carefree life. These two sentences are written very skillfully, and the pen is used without leaving any trace, making people unaware of its cleverness.

The last couplet is the poet's sentiment. Although the spring has passed, the autumn scenery is even better and I am willing to stay. He likes to return to nature, attaches great importance to mountains and rivers, advocates a quiet and indifferent pastoral life, and does not want to join the trend of others.

This poem is a famous landscape poem. It depicts the beautiful scenery of the mountain village and the simple customs of the mountain villagers in the evening after the autumn rain clears. It expresses the poet's love for the mountains, rivers and countryside and his contentment with the seclusion life. It uses natural beauty to express the beauty of personality and society. The whole poem harmoniously and perfectly integrates the coolness of autumn after the rain in the empty mountain, the light of the bright moon among the pines, the sound of the clear spring on the stone, the noisy laughter in the bamboo forest after the return of Huan Nu, and the movement of the fishing boat passing through the lotus, giving people a rich and fresh feeling. feelings. It is like a fresh and beautiful landscape painting, but also like a quiet and beautiful lyrical music, which embodies the creative characteristics of painting in Wang Wei's poems.
