Kennedy pointed out that every athlete has to be tested at different temperatures and different exercise methods. Speed skaters can slide at -5℃, and cross-country skiers can slide at-15℃.
To this end, Kennedy recruited a group of athletes who exercised in cold weather, and when the temperature reached-15℃, they completed the standard laboratory test and outdoor 5 km long-distance running test.
The results showed that among 16 participants, 5 were positive for exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in laboratory tests and 7 were positive for cold air tests. This figure is consistent with previous studies. Among all Nordic or winter athletes, 40% to 50% reported that they suffered from some kind of exercise asthma because of exercising in cold weather.
Kennedy said that when the lungs are exposed to cold and other stressful environments, they will not actively remodel, and with the passage of time, especially during exercise, lung function will become worse.
