The theme slogan of World Meteorological Day

Every year on World Meteorological Day, the Executive Committee of the World Meteorological Organization chooses a publicity theme to raise public awareness of the importance of meteorological issues closely related to it. Each theme reflects the meteorological problems that human beings are concerned about. The theme selection mainly focuses on meteorological work content, main scientific research projects and issues of common concern to all countries in the world.

The theme of World Meteorological Day in 2009 is "Weather, Climate and the Air We Breathe", which aims to arouse people's attention to climate change and air quality. The Fourth Assessment Report on Climate Change issued by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) IPCC)2007 holds that human activities emit a lot of greenhouse gases, which is the main reason for global climate change. IPCC also predicts that with the intensification of climate change, the frequency and intensity of floods, droughts and other extreme weather and climate events will increase. In addition, weather, climate and air quality are closely related to human health. Particulate matter and related pollutants in the air will harm the human respiratory system and heart, leading to asthma, heart disease, lung cancer and other diseases.

As early as 1950s, the World Meteorological Organization took the lead in coordinating the observation and analysis of atmospheric composition. By using a global network consisting of ground observation stations, remote sensing stations, balloon radiosondes, airplanes and satellites, professionals can regularly collect information about greenhouse gases, aerosols and ozone, as well as traditional meteorological and hydrological parameters. Mastering this information will help people to study meteorological problems, and then make early warning and prevention of disasters in advance, so as to minimize the impact of disasters. In his speech on World Meteorological Day in 2009, World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Jarraud emphasized that since 90% of natural disasters are directly related to weather, climate and water disasters, strengthening meteorological work and disaster prevention and mitigation are conducive to achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals. 196 1 meteorological year
