Extended Information:

1. World view

The story of "Pokemon Emerald" is set in the Hoenn region, which is a certain distance away from the Kanto region and Johto region of the previous game. The design of the Hoenn region was based on the Japanese island of Kyushu and the Kyushu region; however, Hoenn was rotated 90° from its prototype because Junichi Masuda felt that this would bring better game balance.

Like Kyushu, Hoenn has many small islands. Part of the area is filled with sea routes, and players can dive in part of the sea routes. Masuda Junichi stated that the place name comes from the Chinese character "豊縁", which means that Hoenn is a place with "rich fate" and represents the theme of the relationship between people and Pokémon.

2. Game plot

The protagonist of the game is a child who has just moved to Weibai Town. At the beginning of the game, the protagonist can choose from Dr. Odamaki one of the Woodshou, the Fire Chick, and the Hydra as his starter Pokémon. The protagonist's friend and rival is also a Pokémon trainer and will challenge the protagonist from time to time. The two main goals of the game are to defeat gym trainers and eventually become the league champion and to complete the Pokédex by capturing evolutions and exchanging Pokémon.

During the journey, they encountered the Fire Fleet and the Water Fleet. The former wanted to use Groudon to expand the land, and the latter attempted to manipulate Kyogre to expand the ocean. After the two summoned their own ultra-ancient Pokémon, Groudon and Kyogre did not obey the order and began to fight, putting the world in water and fire.

The protagonist awakens the legendary Pokémon Rayquaza, who calms the wrath of Groudon and Kyogre. After entering the hall, the protagonist can meet Latias and Latios who are wandering around the Hoenn region, and visit the Grand Challenge area.
