What's it like for youth commandos to participate in flood control?

On July 4th, 1954, at the most tense moment of flood control in Wuhan, the flood continued to rise endlessly. In order to defend the famous city of the motherland, 20,000 to 30,000 young people from various organs, universities and middle schools in the city formed a flood control youth commando.

On July 5th, the youth commandos of Huazhong Normal University arrived at Chenjiashan site. Young commandos from Central and South Authorities, No.2 Boys' School, No.2 Girls' School, Technical School, Workers' and Peasants' Accelerated Middle School and Wuhan No.1 Division successively participated in the flood control work of defending Qiaokou Waterworks and Shen Xin Cotton Mill.

In order to ensure the property of the people in the city, they carried a lot of bricks and dirt in time, provided waterproof walls for workers to protect the factory, and carried soil from Hanyang to cross the river and build dikes to defend Shen Xin Cotton Mill.

The youth commandos of colleges and universities in Hubei Province actively participated in the combat task of repairing the first and second sections of the second line of defense of Wuqingdi and Baishazhou.

On the long beach in Wuhan, in the headquarters in Hankou, in Wuchang, in Hanyang, in Chenjiashan, Moon Bay, Baiquan Mountain, fairy mountain and other famous places, the youth commandos actively participated in the battle, went wherever they needed to go, went as many people as they wanted, and undertook whatever tasks they were assigned.

In the whole battle, the youth commandos dispatched more than 240,000 people, spent more than 430,000 working days, and * * * completed loading and unloading and transporting more than 490,000 cubic meters of soil.

Youth commandos in factories and streets, like those in schools and institutions, have also exerted the positive power of young people under the leadership of factory or district party committees.

July 13 was the rest day of the factory, but the young commandos braved the drizzle and accepted the task of strengthening the earth embankment behind the factory to prevent waterlogging for the first time. They completed the dike restoration work during the holiday, which ensured the production safety of the factory.

The youth commandos of the Fifth Power Plant have played an amazing role in supporting flood control and ensuring safe power supply. They built dikes to check water discharge, drain waterlogging, prevent machine flooding, overcome difficulties and completed the task.

In production, the youth commandos of the Telecommunication Bureau overcame the difficulty of increasing manpower since the flood control and ensured the smooth communication.

When assisting in the relocation, the Youth Commando of Ximalu Street braved the storm and fought day and night. On the one hand, it publicizes the party's policies to the victims, and on the other hand, it cooperates with household registration staff to inspect the disaster areas and maintain their safety.

Youth of all ethnic groups and Wuhan youth joined the battle to defend Wuhan side by side. The Commando Team of South-Central University for Nationalities is a team composed of students, cadres and workers from more than ten nationalities, including Han, Miao, Yao, Dong, Zhuang and Li, and some members of the South-Central National Song and Dance Troupe.

Commandos of Minzu University have undertaken important tasks in Wuchang Outer Section 3, Outer Section 4, Outer Section 5, Inner Section 4, Inner Section 5, Inner Section 6, directly affiliated engineering section, Nanwangshan and the Third Power Plant.

Whenever a storm comes, they are ready to attack. They humbly learned from the workers to build dikes and tamp them, and used their brains to create a record of loading a truckload of soil in 32 seconds.

Young commandos from Huazhong Normal University, Wuhan First Normal College and a girls' middle school all fought in Chenjiashan. In this position, every meter is printed with their footprints, and every piece of soil is soaked with their sweat. Together with the workers, they moved the soil of Chenjiashan to Zhang Gongdi.

On the first day when the Youth Commando of Wuhan No.1 Division drove to Chenjiashan, the weather was sunny and the underground soil was rock solid.

Commandos can't use hoes or shovels. A few minutes later, they had blisters on their hands. Wu Xiang, the deputy squadron leader, took part in the work of Class Four. He had a hearty meal as soon as he came up. He felt dizzy and weak when he was exposed to the sun.

However, Wu Xiang remembered that he wanted to play the leading role, so he kept working for a minute. He put down the hoe for digging, picked up the dustpan for holding soil and threw himself into the digging craze.

The next day, it was cloudy with strong wind and heavy rain. The scarification is not as hard as yesterday, but it is very heavy. The road is muddy and slippery.

Wu Xiang hurried to collect soil again today. He picked up the burden and walked slowly along the springboard. When the empty car turned, he ran quickly across the landslide. Suddenly, he slipped and fell on his back in the pond with a crash.

Everyone was about to pull Wu Xiang when Wu Xiang turned over and got up to continue working.

Driven by Wu Xiang, the students rushed to ask for the task of picking up soil. Like an avalanche, the soil was tamed by young commandos, loaded into the boat one by one and transported to Zhanggong embankment on the other side of the lake.

After nightfall, the young commandos entered the tent, and the bunks near the edge were too wet to sleep. It turns out that everyone only has a ruler and a wide place to squeeze.

Some people gave their seats to wet classmates, holding the stigma of the tent and sleeping for the morning.

Some even soaked the last pair of trousers, and some lay around their bodies with sheets to rest.

The wind outside is getting stronger and stronger, and suddenly a tent is about to fall down. /kloc-Zhang Chunbao, a 0/7-year-old Communist Youth League member, quietly rushed out to repair the tent in the thunderstorm to prevent all the players in the tent from getting cold and wet.

By lightning, Zhang Chunbao moved from one tent to another, nailing the tent of the brigade and the tent of the supplier. When he came back, he was soaked to the skin.

Just before the commando set off, Zhang Chunbao received the news of his father's death. Of course he was very sad, but Zhang Chunbao resolutely embarked on the journey of fighting floods.

On another occasion, Zhang Chunbao gave the notice of the water plant to these four people on a stormy night.

He can't ride a bike because of the wind and rain. Zhang Chunbao barefoot, pushing a bicycle, groping forward in the dark. He slipped and fell on the muddy ground with his car. The car broke down and his waist was bleeding. However, Zhang Chunbao quickly got up and pushed the car and ran away, and delivered the notice at the specified time.

The continuous wind and rain also increased the difficulty of supply work.

Guo Huaishun, a league member, was originally the secretary of the League branch in the class, and later the vice captain of the Fourth Squadron of the Youth Commando. Now he is in charge of supply work.

At first, Guo Huaishun's thought was a little unreasonable, but he still obeyed the distribution of the organization. Especially after Guo Huaishun saw the encouraging effect of a good meal on the combat effectiveness of the commandos, he devoted all his energy to the supply work.

No matter how fast the wind is and how big the waves are, as long as a boat crosses the lake, Guo Huaishun will go shopping in Daijiashan early in the morning and get caught in the rain to ensure that the commandos are not hungry. As long as the food can satisfy everyone, he and all the members of the supply team will feel great glory and happiness.

In the Moon Bay, in the quarry and on all fronts, the youth commandos never flinched.

They saw with their own eyes that the high hillside was turned into a flat land, the majestic long dike stood like a giant under a basket of soil and a load of stones to stop the flood, and hundreds of miles of wave-proof rafts protected the levee like the Great Wall on the water. Only in this way can they deeply realize the significance of labor.

The young commandos experienced the attack of the scorching sun and heavy rain, the pain of swollen shoulders and broken hands, the slippery road in the deep mud, the fatigue of hunger and cold, and the difficulty of technical operation. When their feet put on sandals, poles and hoes instead of pens, and worked for several hours, sweating and wobbling, they realized the hardships of workers.

Everyone marveled that "labor can really move mountains and rivers", realized that "it is not easy to change shoulders", understood that "even washing clothes requires skills" and felt that "the greatest cause in the world is labor" ...

So they are full of deep feelings for workers and laborers, thinking that "a grain of rice and a foot of cloth are the blood and sweat of many workers and peasants", but when their hands are covered with mud and their bodies are soaked with sweat, they feel that the hands of working people are not dirty and their bodies are not smelly.
