What does Shaanxi mean?
Now, Shaanxi Province in Henan Province was called Shaanxi Source in ancient times. According to the records in Guoyu, in the early years of the Western Zhou Dynasty, the Zhou Dynasty was divided into two sites centered on the mountain, with Zhao Gong in the west and Duke Zhou in the east, so the word Shaanxi appeared in the history books of our country as early as the Western Zhou Dynasty.
During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, the name here was "Guanzhong", which was the base area for the Qin Dynasty to dominate the world. After Xiang Yu and his allied forces destroyed Qin, the Guanzhong point of the former Qin was divided into three different kingdoms, so it was also called the land of Sanqin.
After the founding of the Western Han Dynasty, the capital was in Chang 'an, not far from Xianyang, the ancient capital of Qin Dynasty. Since the Western Han Dynasty, many dynasties have also established their capitals in Guanzhong area, which is now what we call Shaanxi.
For example, the unified dynasty of Sui and Tang Dynasties and several separatist forces in Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties all took this place as their political center, but it was mainly called Guanzhong at that time until the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty.
The Anshi Rebellion broke out in the last years of Xuanzong. Although it was finally put down by the Tang Dynasty, there were a lot of situations in which our era was too big to fail. The whole world is divided into provinces, and the central government has very limited jurisdiction over local governments.
Coupled with the rapid decline of national strength and the rise of the peripheral Tubo Empire, the situation near Chang 'an, the capital of the Tang Dynasty, was particularly unstable. Therefore, at that time, the Tang Dynasty had to set up the Shaanxi Provincial Commissioner to control several counties west of Chang 'an as a buffer zone between the capital and the Tibetan empire on the plateau.
So in the middle and late Tang Dynasty, Shaanxi officially changed into the name of the administrative region. At the end of the Tang Dynasty, Fengxiang was also set up here. However, in the Tang Dynasty, Shaanxi, as an administrative planning area, was not large, with only a few counties and counties, which did not have broad significance. It was not until the troubled times, the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms were ended by the Song Dynasty that it changed.
After the establishment of the Song Dynasty, Kansai Road was established in Guanzhong area of the pre-Tang Dynasty. Later, due to the original intention of internal administrative division and reducing local power, the original road-level administrative area was gradually changed to a smaller area but the administrative level remained basically the same. On the basis of the original West Road, Shaanxi Road was established.
