Season in the fjords

——March to May

From March to May, daytime temperatures begin to drop. Generally, the highest temperature is 18℃ in March. By May, the air gets cooler, reaching 6-8℃. Autumn's weather is dry and clear, making for a fabulous scenic trip flying over fjords and mountains or walking through the rainforest. In areas around Te Anau and Lake Manapouri, trees are decked out in yellow, orange and red. ——June to August

In winter, daytime temperatures fluctuate between 5-9℃. The mountains are covered in thick, dazzling white snow, which could lead to the closure of Milford Road. If you drive in this area, you will need to install snow chains on your wheels. An easier option is to park your car in Te Anau or Manapuri and join a tour group, so you can enjoy Fiordland's winter beauty without having to worry about icy roads. ——September to November

From September to November, the daytime temperature is between 10-19℃. Wear a few layers of clothing and you'll quickly adjust to the change. Due to frequent rainfall, you should bring a raincoat with you. But the fresh, rain-washed beauty makes up for these inconveniences. Snowfall occasionally occurs in Milford Sound. On Milford Road, you can admire Mount Cook lilies blooming outside your car window and other alpine plants near Homer Tunnel. ——December to February

In Fiordland, summer is considered the busiest season. You need to book accommodation and activities in advance. If you want to drive to Milford Sound on your own, get to the highway early to avoid crowds. If you'd rather not drive, join a guided tour who will take you on some excellent short walks and scenic views on the way to Milford. Long daylight hours mean you can fit in multiple activities throughout the day. When you return to Te Anau or Manapuri, enjoy an evening lakeside walk.
