To the east of the lake is Luguhu Town, Yanyuan County (formerly Zuosuo District), and to the west of the lake is Yongning Township, ninglang county. Lugu Lake is a plateau fault erosion lake, which consists of a northwest-southeast fault and two east-west faults.

Lugu Lake belongs to Litang River system and is a tributary of Jinsha River and Yalong River, the main stream of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Lugu Lake has 18 rivers (Yunnan 1 1, Sichuan 7 rivers). The lake flows eastward through Dacaohai into Qiansuo River in Yanyuan County, then into Gaizu River (downstream called Yongning River), then into Wolong River (also known as Wolong River and Yanyuan River), and finally into Litang River.

Lugu Lake is located in the Hengduan Mountain area in the southwest of China, with a latitude of 27 degrees 42 minutes 17 seconds north and a longitude of 100 degrees 46 minutes 5 seconds east. It is characterized by low latitude and high mountain climate, abundant rainfall and obvious dry and wet seasons. Due to the high terrain and abundant sunshine, the temperature difference between morning and evening is large. Lugu Lake is surrounded by mountains, and the lake area is vast, which has the function of regulating temperature. Extreme weather and freezing rarely occur in the lake area. Lugu Lake is adjacent to ninglang county and Yanyuan County, with similar latitude and topography. Perennial climate data generally refer to the data of these two counties.
