What do ants like to eat?
In the past, I often saw ants eating sugary foods such as biscuits, bread, and juice, but I have never seen them eating sour or spicy foods. Do they really just like to eat them? Sweet tooth? With this curiosity in mind, I used this summer vacation to conduct a field investigation on the eating habits of ants.
Experiment time: August 27, 2006 (Sunday)
Weather conditions: Sunny
Experimenter: a fifth grade primary school student (assisted by his father and mother) Complete the experiment)
Experimental location: The grassland near the Second Dam of the Ming Tombs Reservoir in Beijing (see photo 1)
(It takes about 40 minutes to drive from the West Third Ring Road in Beijing to the destination) < /p>
Preparation of experimental samples: Prepare samples for experiments before departure
1. First, cut the steamed buns (without sugar, etc.) into seven small pieces;
< p>2. Add honey, soy sauce, water, vinegar, spicy oil, cola, and orange juice to the cut small pieces of steamed buns (I call them "samples");3. Then add Each sample was placed individually in a transparent plastic bag.
Tools to carry:
1. Pens, notebooks, digital cameras, experimental samples
2. Garbage bags
Experiment 1:
Experimental steps:
1. After arriving at the destination, first look for a relatively flat place without too tall weeds and where it is easier to conduct experiments;
2 , and then place the seven samples at a distance of about 1 to 2 meters (see photo 2). Confirm whether there is any problem with sample placement.
2. Then we left the experimental site about 3 meters away to avoid scaring the ants and affecting the experimental results.
3. Halfway through the experiment (about 30 minutes after the experiment starts), observe the ants at close range and fill in the number of ants in various samples in the prepared form.
4. After about 1 hour, fill in the number of ants in various samples and observe the ants carefully.
Experimental results:
Through the first experiment, the following conclusions were obtained: the steamed buns soaked in water had the largest number of ants; the second largest number were buns soaked in honey and cola. The third most popular are steamed buns dipped in spicy oil; the fourth are steamed buns dipped in orange juice and soy sauce; and the last are steamed buns dipped in vinegar (see photo 3).

Question:
From above It can be seen from the experimental results that colorless and odorless water attracts the most ants, while sour steamed buns attract the least ants. Are ants really like this? With this question in mind, we conducted a second experiment.
Experiment 2:
Experimental steps:
1. First, gently remove the ants attached to the samples, and then place the seven samples separately. Conduct the experiment within a triangular area spaced approximately 10 cm apart (see photo 3). Then confirm whether there is any problem with the sample placement.
2. Then we left the experimental site about 3 meters away to avoid frightening the ants and affecting the experimental results.
3. After about 30 minutes, fill in the number of ants in various samples. And watch the ants carefully.
From the results of the second experiment, we can see that the steamed buns dipped in spicy oil contained about 70 ants at most; the second one, the steamed buns dipped in orange juice, had about 30 ants; and the third, the most. The fourth is about 10 steamed buns dipped in vinegar; the fourth is about 5 buns dipped in honey; the fifth is about 4 buns dipped in cola; the sixth is about 3 buns dipped in water; and finally There was not a single steamed bun dipped in soy sauce.

Experimental Results
After comparing the experimental results Table 1 and Table 2, I think it can The following conclusions were drawn:
1. In the first investigation, it may be due to the different living environment and eating habits of ants in various places, and some samples are placed far away from the ants’ homes (nests). ) is close, so the experimental results obtained are somewhat surprising.
2. Little ants like to eat greasy food, but big ants like to eat sweet food.
3. Small ants walk very regularly and neatly, while big ants walk in their own way.
4. In the experiment, it was seen that small ants are more united than large ants, and they work together to carry food together.
5. When the big ants eat honey but there are no small ants, the reasons may be:
(1) The small ants do not like to eat honey and like to eat greasy things.
(2) Because the big ants are there, the little ants are afraid of the big ants and dare not eat.
6. When the small ants eat but there are no big ants, the reasons may be:
The small ants and the big ants like to eat different things.
7. The results of both experiments showed that the steamed buns containing vinegar contained less ants. The possible reasons are:
Vinegar contains acid, and the ants themselves will secrete acidic things. So ants don't like acidic things.
8. The results of both experiments showed that ants do not like to eat steamed buns with soy sauce, so it can be said that ants do not like to eat salty things.
My gains:
Through this experiment, I gained the following gains:
(1) Know what various ants like to eat;
(2) Personal contact with nature and small animals, which increased extracurricular knowledge;
(3) Preliminarily learned how to do small scientific experiments, and improved my observation ability .
My expectations:
I will continue to do experiments on ants in the future. Better understand the eating habits of ants.

So uncle and aunt, what do you think ants like to eat? !
With this question in mind, I conducted a questionnaire survey with the help of my father. The survey was conducted online. On August 31***, 329 uncles and aunts participated in my survey.
The questions asked to uncles and aunts are:
1. "What do you think ants like most?"
2. "What do you think ants like most?" What do you not like to eat? ”
The following are the results of the survey:
What do ants like to eat most?
Steamed buns dipped in soy sauce 8.0%
Steamed buns dipped in white vinegar 8.2%
Steamed buns dipped in spicy oil 6.2%
Steamed buns dipped in cola 4.8%
Steamed buns dipped in orange juice 7.2%
Steamed buns dipped in water 1.0%
Steamed buns dipped in honey 64.6% < /p>
What do ants dislike eating the most?
Steamed buns dipped in soy sauce 7.4%
Steamed buns dipped in white vinegar 38.4%
Steamed buns dipped in spicy oil 31.6%
Steamed buns dipped in cola 9.0%
Steamed buns dipped in orange juice 2.6%
Steamed buns dipped in water 8.8%
Steamed buns dipped in honey 1.8% < /p>
In the results of the survey, many uncles and aunts (66.9%) believed that the number one thing ants like to eat is steamed buns dipped in honey; and the number one thing ants dislike eating the most is steamed buns dipped in honey. The first place is steamed buns dipped in white vinegar (39.2%), and the second place is steamed buns dipped in spicy oil (30.4%).

My expectations:

--------------------------------------------- ------Observing ants
Today, I got up early and observed ants in a dry place.
I used a magnifying glass to see clearly the true face of the ant: the ant's body is composed of three small balls. Its head is relatively large, with two flexible tentacles on it. Its mouth looks like two curved pliers. Its chest is a bit small. Six thin and long legs grow here, and its belly is round and trailing behind.
I used a red crayon to draw a circle around an ant. The ant suddenly panicked and must have been thinking: Oh my god, how could such a red obstacle appear in front of me? Will it eat me? So, I took a few steps back in fear. Unexpectedly, I encountered the red obstacle again, and I was startled again: I had no choice but to grit my teeth and push through. It carefully raised its foot and touched the red line. There was no movement. Then it stepped forward with confidence and climbed out on tiptoes.
If you can withstand the test of "obstacles", you must not be able to withstand the water. I want to create a "flood". So, I poured some water on an ant. It floated up all of a sudden, struggling desperately, its hands formed a "human" shape, and its "hairs" seemed to stand up. After two or three seconds, it was blown to the ground again by the wind, and miraculously stood up. Ants are so tenacious in life!
I took another piece of bread and put it on the ground to see how the ants carried the food. After a while, a big ant was attracted by the smell. It climbed up and down, looked around, and finally figured it out. This is a very large piece of milk bread. It quickly crawled home. After a while, the ant came out, followed by a large, dark group of people. Suddenly, more than twenty ants surrounded the piece of bread. Under the command of the big ants, some ants got to the bottom and prepared to lift the bread; some ants bit the bread to make it easier to move the bread forward. Perhaps because the bread was too big, some ants gnawed some pieces and carried them home first. In this way, the group of ants worked together and moved the bread into the house step by step. I was stunned.
What a cute little creature, I was a little amazed. When they encounter difficulties, they do not bow their heads and retreat, but fight forward and finally win; when they see delicious food, they know how to share, unite and help each other, and work together to move home.
Aren’t we trying to learn this spirit?
