The life experiences of Ramsey family and several guests before and after World War I. Mr Ramsey's youngest son James wants to go to the lighthouse, but he can't because of the bad weather. After the war broke out, the Ramsey family went through many vicissitudes. After the war, Mr Ramsey took a pair of children to the sea by boat and finally reached the lighthouse.
