At noon in midsummer, the scorching sun, farmers are still working, sweat dripping in the soil. Who would have thought that every grain of rice in our bowl was bought by farmers' hard work?
Appreciation: The first sentence of the poem summarizes the activities, time and weather that farmers engage in. Farmers are still sowing in the hottest time. The second sentence describes that farmers' sweat drips into the soil, highlighting their hard work. Three or four sentences express the poet's feelings and tell us to cherish food and respect farmers.
About the author: Li Shen, a prime minister and poet in the Tang Dynasty, is the author of Benevolence for Agriculture, and his ancestral home is Qiao County, Bozhou. Li Shen became a scholar at the age of 35. Later, he served as assistant minister of Zhongshu and right servant of Shangshu. He is a participant in the new Yuefu movement. Representative works include Sympathy for Peasants, Answering Zhang Xiaobao and Looking at Qingyun.
