Do hedgehogs hibernate? Why?

Hedgehogs need to hibernate, because hedgehogs are heterogeneous animals, and they can't regulate their body temperature stably in winter, so they hibernate because cold weather will keep their body temperature. Hibernation lasts about four or five months, usually starting in late autumn and not waking up until the temperature rises in the following spring.

When the hedgehog hibernates in its nest, its body temperature will drop to 6℃. In this case, the hedgehog is the animal with the lowest body temperature in the world, breathing 1- 10 times per minute.

In addition, litter is hedgehogs' favorite hibernation place, and they can also hibernate under wooden stairs or other artificial places. The hibernating hedgehog wakes up occasionally, but doesn't eat, and soon falls asleep again. If they wake up too early, they will starve to death because there is no food. After the hedgehog enters hibernation, its body temperature will drop, its physiological function will be weakened, and its metabolism will be minimized. It mainly relies on oxidized fat to supply energy and water.
