Brief introduction of Doppler weather radar

The new generation Doppler weather radar system has been deployed in China since 1998. The Doppler effect was first discovered by Austrian physicist J.Doppler 1842 from a moving sound source. The working principle of Doppler weather radar is based on Doppler effect, which shows that when precipitation particles move relative to the radar transmitting beam, the difference of high frequency between the received signal and the transmitted signal can be measured, so as to obtain the required information. Using this principle, the velocity of scatterer relative to radar can be measured, and the distribution of atmospheric wind field, vertical velocity of airflow and turbulence can be inversed under certain conditions. This is of great significance for studying the formation of precipitation, analyzing small and medium-scale weather systems and preventing severe convective weather.
