May and June, also known as "May and June", refer to the hottest time between May and June in the lunar calendar. When the grain is ripe and the agriculture is busy.
There is a saying in the Dragon Boat Festival: "On May 5th, five colors and three whites celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival together." There are also customs of eating "Huang Wu" and "Five Whites" during the Dragon Boat Festival in the south of the Yangtze River. "Huang Wu" people are cucumber, eel, yellow croaker, salted egg yolk and realgar wine (opinions vary, some people regard Huangmei and Huangni snail as one of the Huang Wu.
Because realgar is poisonous, it is rarely drunk in liquor now, and it is more common to replace realgar with yellow wine now. "Five whites" means boiled meat, white garlic, boiled chicken, white tofu and water bamboo. Eating "Huang Wu" and "Five White" dishes on the Dragon Boat Festival can clear away heat and reduce fire, strengthen the spleen and regulate the stomach.
Of course, it is also an important custom to eat zongzi and race dragon boats in order to commemorate the cultural significance and vote for Qu Yuan of Miluo River!
Huang Wu refers to: Monopterus albus, yellow croaker, cucumber, salted egg yolk and yellow rice wine. Realgar is poisonous, so people generally drink ordinary rice wine instead of realgar wine. In May of the lunar calendar, Hangzhou people call it May Yellow Moon, which is named because there are five kinds of food with "yellow" sounds on the market. On the Dragon Boat Festival, people in Hangzhou must eat "Huang Wu".
