Introduction

The aircraft carrier Antieton (CV-36) is an aircraft carrier belonging to the US Navy. It is the 18 of the Essex-class aircraft carrier and the eighth of the Essex-class aircraft carrier. She was the second warship named Antietam in the United States to commemorate the Battle of Antietam in the Battle of Maryland in the Civil War: the North and South armies lost nearly 23,000 soldiers in one day, which was the deadliest one-day battle in American history, and General Lee was prevented from going north. Antington is also the world's first aircraft carrier with an inclined flight deck. Antieton was launched in 1944 and put into service in early 1945, but it still failed to participate in World War II. Later, he took part in the Korean War. After the Korean War, Antieton mainly conducted exercises and training with NATO fleet in the Atlantic Ocean. 1963 retired, 1974 sold and dismantled. In addition to CV-36, Antieton was given hull numbers of CVA-36 and CVS-36.

Construction and configuration modification

The Antieton is a long Essex-class No.8 ship. Its construction and configuration are based on Ticonderoga. It has a longer hull and better anti-aircraft gun configuration than the prototype Essex class. The keel of Antieton was placed at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on May 1943. She was the first Essex class ship built there. On August 20th 1944, Antieton was launched,1October 28th was put into use, 1945. Antington did not participate in the transformation of SCB-27 and SCB- 125, but it was the first aircraft carrier in the world with an inclined flight deck. Both the United States and Britain drew Midway Island and Victory for corresponding experiments, and the former was finally modified. However, the Antieton was rebuilt on September 8, 1952, and all tests were completed on March 28, 1953, which was earlier than the Essex class of SCB- 125 and the midway class of SCB- 1 10: both were at 65430.

The main advantage of inclined flight deck is to improve the lift efficiency of aircraft. The plane can take off through the lifting platform and catapult on the front deck, while the left inclined deck is dedicated to landing. If the plane can't land because of the angle of entry, speed or even damage, it can immediately speed up and fly away from the mother ship instead of rushing to the front deck, causing an accident. Later, the US Navy also installed two catapults on the oblique flight deck, which enabled it to take off and improve the attack efficiency. The earliest catapult in America was the Forrest class. The original flight deck of Antieton was 876 feet long, slightly shorter than the hull length. The new inclined flight deck is 525 feet long and 8 degrees and 9 minutes off the central axis. The external lifting platform of the left chord moved to the end of the inclined deck, 34 feet away from the ship. The lifting platform design was later applied to Fresta class, but it was rarely used because of its low efficiency. It was not until Kitty Hawk class that the lifting platform was moved to the stern of the ship. The landing hook deceleration rope on the landing deck was reset, but the original interception net was not installed. The Navy later suggested that the inclined flight deck should be expanded to deviate from the central axis 10.5 degrees, which was adopted by Essex class of SCB- 125. Antinton repainted its shaft without any reconstruction.

World War II and Civil War

After serving, Antington conducted airworthiness tests in the Caribbean and conducted pilot training. 1945 On May19, the Antieton left Philadelphia, crossed the Panama Canal and arrived in San Diego on June 10. After replenishment, the Antieton arrived at Pearl Harbor on 19. The Antieton stayed in Hawaiian waters for training and did not fight in Japan. It was not until August 12 that Antieton was sent to the western Pacific, but three days later Japan surrendered and the war was over, so Antieton could not take part in the battle. The Antieton arrived in Eniwetok on 19, and left for Japan with cabot on 2 1. Due to the damage of internal parts, Antinton went to Guam for inspection and visited China instead. The Antieton arrived in Okinawa on the 30th, entered Shanghai waters on September 2nd, and then returned to the United States. 1946 On April 20th, Antieton went to the western Pacific again, mainly patrolling the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan, and returned to the United States on August 9th. 1 65438+1On October 20th, the Antington accidentally exploded at the San Francisco Shipyard, killing1person and injuring 34 others. Later, the Antieton was sent to the western Pacific on duty, and was guarded during the civil war in China until 1949 was transferred back to the United States, and it was retired on June 12 of the same year.

Hanzhan

1On June 25th, 950, the Korean army crossed the 38th parallel and raided South Korea, and the Korean War broke out. On February 6, 65438, the navy began to prepare for the service of Antieton, and officially resumed its active service on June 61951KLOC-0/7, and conducted airworthiness testing and training on the west coast to prepare for the western Pacific. On September 8th, Antieton left alameda, passed through Pearl Harbor and other places, and left Yokosuga on June 65438+1October 65438+1October 0 1 to join the US fleet, while avoiding Typhoon Ruth. 15, Antieton joined the fleet and began to fight. The typhoon landed in Japan on the same day, running through Kyushu, Shikoku and Honshu, hitting the military port of Sasebo city hard, and many places were seriously affected. Antington mainly conducts reconnaissance and attacks on supply lines. The dense fog once reduced or suspended the fleet's flight for several days. 165438+1On October 4th, two flight accidents occurred in Antioch. At 5 am, 1 A- 1 crashed into the sea due to the failure of the left string catapult, but there were no casualties. In fact, due to overwork, the catapult of Antieton is too slow, or even under-charged, which often delays operation and even leads to accidents. At 9: 45 am, 1 F9F failed to land, and the connection between the tail hook and the interception cable failed. The pilot forcibly landed again, pressed the front wheel onto the deck, and the wheel was reimbursed immediately. The fuselage glided at high speed on the deck, avoiding all interception nets and finally crashing into the aircraft parking area. The pilot and three others were killed, 10 was injured and seven planes were damaged. On that day, the Antieton was forced to stop fighting. 14, Antieton went to Yokosuga to rest and was replaced by Essex. Antieton * * * carried out 1 and 4 18 battles, but due to the nature of the mission, only 6 16 of them were carried out by jets. The captain even suggested reducing the number of jet planes. 165438+1On October 28th, Antioch resumed fighting and attacked Yuanshan and other places. The injector parts are replaced once a day, which greatly reduces the accident and failure rate. 65438+February 1 1 Antieton and Essex jointly attacked several supply lines in North Korea and cut off 937 railway sections. Good weather is also conducive to flight operation, and only the 26th and 27th were grounded due to snowstorm. On February 28th, 65438, the Antieton went to Yokosuga Shipyard for maintenance, and the sailors were on vacation. During this trip, Antioch * * * fought 1 and 65 1, and jets accounted for 803 times, more than last time. 1952 65438+1October 16, the Antieton left Yokosuga and resumed fighting two days later, attacking the North Korean supply line. The cold weather makes it difficult for the plane to take off and land. On the 27th, Antieton cut off 1 14 in one day, of which 68 sections were completed by 12 aircraft in a wave of attacks. The Antieton will arrive in Yokosuga again on February 6th. During this trip, Antieton fought 1, 0 17 times. On February 18, the Antieton left Hong Kong and took part in the Korean War for the last time. And Essex and Wisconsin. Two days later, the Antieton continued to attack. On this trip, Antioch fought 1 and 5 16. 19, Antieton sailed for Yokosuga and returned to the United States on May 2, ending its cruise in the Korean War.

change

The Antieton joined the reserve fleet after returning home, and then went to the east coast to join the Atlantic fleet via the Panama Canal. On September 8th, the Antieton entered the Brooklyn Shipyard in new york and rebuilt the inclined flight deck. The navy still regards the transformation as an experiment, and if successful, it will be used for Essex class and midway class. On June 65438+1 October1day of the same year, the Antieton was reorganized into the attack aircraft carrier (CVA). After the reconstruction, Antington tested the lift of the plane on the east coast. From June 1953, 1 1 to July 2 1, Antieton left the coast and conducted airworthiness tests in the North Atlantic. The Antieton recorded 1738 landings before and after, and took off immediately after 2369 landings, including night flights. On August 8, Antieton was adapted as an anti-submarine carrier (CVS) and began corresponding training. 195565438+1On October 5th, Antieton patrolled the Mediterranean Sea to perform an anti-submarine mission, and returned to the United States on March15th. 1956101October10/day, Antieton made its last ocean cruise, went to the Atlantic Ocean and NATO fleets for exercises, and visited several ports in Western Europe and Northern Europe. During the Suez Canal War, Antieton shortened its visit to the Netherlands, left Rotterdam, went to the Mediterranean to guard, and evacuated American nationals to Alexandria. 65438+On February 22nd, Antieton returned to America. Since 1957, Antieton has been used as a training ship on the east coast, including evaluating students and pilots of naval military schools and conducting flight tests. Although the main training place is Peng Sacola, it is inaccessible due to the shallow water in the port. It was not until 1958 that the navy dug deep into the seabed that Antieton set up its home port in Peng Sacola in 1959+ 10.

Participate in space missions

1961On May 4th, 2008, Marcand Ross and Victor Prather took the helium balloon strato-Lab V to test project mercury's spacesuit on the deck of Antieton. The balloon rose to 34,668 meters, breaking the record of manned balloon flight, which has been maintained to this day. After 9 hours and 54 minutes, the balloon splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico and the helicopter took off to rescue. Although Ross slipped, he managed to fasten the sling. Proze, on the other hand, was not fastened properly and fell into the sea when the helicopter took off, because the spacesuit drowned in the water. The Antieton continued to train on the shore. In September and June of the same year, two category 5 hurricanes "Hattie" and "Kara" attacked the United States and Central America respectively. The Antieton went to Texas and Belize City to assist in the rescue, carrying food and medicine.

honour

196210123 On October, Lexington took over Antieton as a training ship in Sacola, and Peng and Antieton went to Philadelphia Shipyard and retired on May 8 1963. After being parked for a long time, Antieton was retired on May 1973 and sold for dismantling on February 28th 1974.
