In 1955, 55 generals were awarded the rank of general of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. They are:

From 1955 to 1965, the Communist Party of China awarded or promoted 10 Marshals of the People's Republic of China, 10 Generals of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, 57 Generals of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, 177 Chinese People's Liberation Army lieutenant generals and 1,360 Chinese People's Liberation Army major generals.

As of September 30, 2019, there are still 10 people alive, while all those at the rank of lieutenant general and above have died. The first person to die was He Bingyan (1960), who was 47 years old. The last person to die was Lu Zhengcao (in 2009) at the age of 106.

The average age when the general was awarded the title was 47.5 years old. The eldest among them was Tao Zhiyue, who was 63 years old at the time; the youngest was Xiao Hua, who was 39 years old at the time.
