Is there an earthquake in Beijing?

There was an earthquake in Beijing. Since historical records, there have been 79 earthquakes of magnitude 5 or above in Beijing and its neighboring areas, including 8 earthquakes 1 time, 5 earthquakes of magnitude 7-7.9 and 22 earthquakes of magnitude 6-6.9.

The only earthquake of magnitude 8 in Yanshan seismic belt occurred at the junction of Pinggu and Sanhe. In addition, earthquakes of magnitude 6 or above have also occurred in Pinggu, Tongxian, Daxing, Haidian and Changping. Strong earthquakes of magnitude 6.8 and 6.5 also occurred in Huailai and Zhuoxian counties adjacent to Beijing.

1On July 26th, 967, an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred in Haituo Mountain, Yanqing. In the past two or three decades, the earthquake activity in Beijing and its adjacent areas has been very active.

In the fifth active period of Chinese mainland earthquake, Zhangbei M6.2 1998 in June, and Shunyi M4 1996 in February had a great influence on Beijing.

Extended data:

Earthquakes are caused by the rupture of rocks inside the earth when the pressure exceeds the strength of the rocks. The rocks in the upper crust are elastic materials, which are prone to various elastic deformations.

In the original state, the rock is constantly deformed under the action of stress. In the elastic strain range of rock, this deformation does not release energy, but is transformed into strain form. With the accumulation of energy, stress and strain increase continuously.

Each rock has its own strength and elastic deformation range. When the stress on the rock in the earth exceeds the elastic deformation range that the rock can bear, the rock breaks. At the same time, earthquakes occur because of elastic rebound and vibration.
