What is the significance of the solar term "Cold Dew"?

Cold dews

(cold dews) is one of the twenty-four solar terms in the Chinese lunar calendar.

Cold dew - the temperature is lower, the air has condensed with dew, and it is getting colder. This day usually falls on October 8th or 9th every year.

Cold dew occurs when the sun reaches 195° of ecliptic longitude on October 8 or 9 every year. "Collection of the Seventy-two Hours of the Moon Order" says: "On the ninth day of the ninth month, the dew is cold and will condense." Cold dew means that the temperature is lower than that of white dew, and the dew on the ground is colder and is about to condense into frost. During the cold dew season, autumn has entered in Nanling and the vast areas north of it, and winter has entered or is about to enter in the northeast and northwest regions. The first frost can already be seen in the capital Beijing in most years. Except for the Tibetan Plateau, where snow falls all year round, snow has generally begun to fall in the Northeast and northern Xinjiang.

In ancient my country, cold dew was divided into three periods: "In the first period, swan geese come to visit; in the second period, birds and floods turn into clams; in the third period, chrysanthemums have yellow flowers." In this solar term, the swan geese are arranged in a line or a herringbone. The queues migrated south in a large scale; in the late autumn, when it was cold and the birds disappeared, the ancients saw many clams suddenly appearing on the seashore, and the stripes and colors of the shells were very similar to those of birds, so they thought they were transformed by birds; "Chrysanthemum begins to bloom" means that chrysanthemums are generally blooming at this time.

After the cold dew, the cold air in the north has gained some influence. Most areas of our country are under the control of cold high pressure, and the rainy season has ended. The weather is often warm during the day, cool at night, and has clear skies, which is very beneficial to the autumn harvest. Thunderstorms have disappeared in most areas of mainland my country, and thunder can still be heard in parts of Yunnan, Sichuan and Guizhou. The precipitation in October in North China is generally only half or less than that in September, while in northwest China it is only a few millimeters to more than 20 millimeters. Drought and lack of rainfall often bring difficulties to the timely sowing of winter wheat and become one of the main limiting factors for high yields of dryland wheat.

Hainan and southwest regions generally still experience continuous autumn rain at this time. In a few years, rainy weather also occurs in Jianghuai and Jiangnan, which has a certain impact on autumn harvest and autumn planting.

"Don't pick cotton when there is cold dew, don't blame the sky for frost." Harvest cotton as soon as the weather is fine. In years when the temperature drops early, cotton can be collected when the temperature is not too low. The single-crop late rice in Jianghuai and Jiangnan is about to mature, and the double-crop late rice is filling. Pay attention to intermittent irrigation to keep the fields moist.

Southern rice areas should also pay attention to preventing the harm of "cold dew wind". Wheat sowing in North China should be carried out as soon as possible. At this time, if there is drought and little rain, efforts should be made to create moisture and sow the seeds to ensure that the sowing is completed before and after frost. We must not passively wait for rain to cause early sowing and late wheat planting. Before and after cold dew is the suitable sowing period for direct-seeded rape in the Yangtze River Basin. In terms of variety arrangement, cabbage-type varieties should be sown first, followed by cabbage-type varieties. Green manure sowing in the south of the Huaihe River must be finished as soon as possible, and ditches must be cleared and drained of seedlings that have emerged to prevent waterlogging. The expansion of sweet potatoes in the North China Plain gradually stops. At this time, the probability of the early morning temperature being below 10°C or lower gradually increases. Harvesting should be carried out according to the weather conditions and strive to be completed before the early frost. Otherwise, the ground will withstand the low temperature for a long time. If it grows too long, the potato pieces will become "hard-core" due to freezing, which will reduce their value for food, feeding and industry, and they cannot be stored or used for seed purposes.

After the white dew, the weather turns cooler and dew begins to appear. When the cold dew arrives, the dew increases and the temperature becomes lower. Frost will appear in some areas of our country at this time. In the north, it is already showing the scene of late autumn, with white clouds and red leaves, and occasional early frost. In the south, autumn is getting stronger, and the cicadas are still alive. The custom of climbing is more popular among Beijingers. Jingshan Park, Badachu, Xiangshan, etc. are all good places for climbing. The Double Nine Climbing Festival will attract many tourists.

In ancient times, dew was used as a symbol of cooler weather. During the white dew solar term in mid-autumn, "the dew condenses and turns white", and by the time of the cold dew in autumn, "the dew is cold and will condense" into frost.

At this time, temperatures continue to drop in most parts of southern my country. The average daily temperature in South China is less than 20°C. Even in areas along the Yangtze River, the mercury hardly rises above 30°C, while the lowest temperature can drop below 10°C. Except for a few river valleys and lowlands in the northwest plateau, the average climatic (5-day) temperature is generally below 10°C. According to the climatological standard for dividing four seasons, it is already winter. Thousands of miles of frost and thousands of miles of snow drifting, which are completely different from the autumn colors in South China.

During the year-round cold dew period, rainfall in South China is also decreasing. It is mostly around 20 mm in the western part of South China, and generally around 30 to 40 mm in the eastern part. The frequent rains, which come and go in the morning and evening, affect production in the "Three Autumn Periods" and become a disastrous weather in most areas of southern my country. The climate characteristics accompanying the continuous rain are: high humidity, more clouds, less sunshine, more cloudy days, and foggy days have also increased significantly since then. However, whether the autumn rain is serious or not will directly affect the progress and quality of "Three Autumn Festivals". To this end, on the one hand, we must make use of weather forecasts to harvest and sow on sunny days; on the other hand, we must also adapt to local conditions and adopt various effective farming measures such as deep trenches and high compartments to reduce moisture damage and improve sowing quality. In plateau areas, one of the most serious seasons for snow damage is before and after cold dew. Snow blocks traffic and harms livestock production, so precautions should be taken.
